Son: Dad, is that soul, pop, or rock?
Dad: Son, that's the beauty of it. Back then, nobody cared what you called it. When a voice sounded like THAT, you just turned it up.
Somewhere out there is a house you grew up in, with strangers sleeping in your old bedroom. That's a strange thought when you really think about it.
There was something magical about being the last kid awake, watching a movie you weren't supposed to see, with the TV volume barely above a whisper.
Childhood in the '80s meant climbing onto rooftops to retrieve baseballs, jumping fences, and cutting through strangers' yards. Nobody threatened lawsuits. We just kept playing.
Picture being eleven years old, carrying a pocketknife everywhere, and nobody thinking twice about it. Half the boys in school had one. Today, the principal would call the police.
Today's world would lose its mind watching a group of twelve-year-olds light a campfire in the woods, roast hot dogs, and put it out themselves.

My generation used metal playground slides hot enough to fry an egg, seesaws that launched kids into orbit, and monkey bars over concrete. Nobody filed complaints. We lined up for another turn.
Did your parents ever leave you in the car with the windows cracked, doors unlocked and the radio playing while they ran into the grocery store?
How long did you usually have to wait?

Somewhere along the way, letting your kid walk three blocks alone became controversial. In 1972, we walked to school, the arcade, the store, and everywhere else without supervision.

Imagine explaining to today's parents that your mother sent you to the store for cigarettes with a handwritten note and a couple of dollars. The cashier didn't even blink.
Here's something today's parents might find unbelievable. We went swimming in creeks and ponds without lifeguards, adult supervision, or even permission.
Did you have a forbidden swimming spot?

We climbed trees higher than rooftops, jumped off garage roofs into snowbanks, and built ramps out of scrap wood. Our parents didn't supervise every second. We learned our limits the hard way.

The biggest lie of the '70s was your mother saying, "We're not stopping anywhere."
That meant you were about to visit six relatives.

The one thing every kid was terrified of getting caught doing back in the day was ________.

The older I get, the more I miss the things nobody photographed. Mom clipping coupons. Dad washing the car. Dinner being called from the back door. The screen door slamming. A whole world disappeared while we were growing up.
