“We found that the AI Super PACs were more toxic with voters than Wall Street, cryptocurrency or AIPAC,” Charles Blaettler, political director of Guardrails Alliance (@GuardrailsNow), a PAC that combats AI spending that the advocacy group is part of, told Inc. “The influence of AI money on elections and politics sits at this nexus of the anxieties that people are feeling about AI, and this increased disgust people have around corruption and special interest money and politics.”

The AI corporate lobby says the quiet part out loud: They are losing the AI debate, so their spending will be on other issues to confuse voters. This is not out of the ordinary, but it is also not often said this clearly. Props to @TomorrowTgthr and @GuardrailsNow for treating voters with respect and being clear on what they are advocating for.
There are two kinds of outside-group ad: 1. Help an organization's allies by advertising on the issues that that candidate has identified work well in their favor, or against their opponent (typically identified through a redbox). This is usually NOT an issue the org itself cares about; the point is that the candidate appreciates the ads because it's a message that their internal polling tells them works. This is the strategy employed by AIPAC, crypto pacs, Leading the Future, and lots of others. 2. An ad on the organization's pet issue (like this ⬇️), which hasn't been identified as a candidate's favored message. The goal of these ads is really for the org to piggyback on the candidate's expected victory by spinning after the election that the race hinged on their pet issue. But candidates don't really like this, and it benefits the org's spin more than it builds appreciation for the candidate. This strategy is being employed by AI safety PACs, who are generally more interested in elevating the perceived salience of their issue than in building political allies.

Guardrails Alliance PAC, which pushes AI regulations, hits Republican Laurie Buckhout in #NC01: "Buckout's got the backing of ... tech execs who want data centers in our backyards to build tech that'll take our jobs, and that researchers are saying might even take everything."

We're expanding the map and taking on Leading the Future in North Carolina's 1st Congressional District, where scandal plagued Republican Laurie Buckhout, who bet on her own campaign, has gotten over half a million dollars in outside spending from the AI industry.

Guardrails Alliance is going big in AZ-1 to take on Jay Feely, who received over $500,000 in support from corporate AI super PAC Leading the Future. We know what a liability corporate AI money is and that's why we're letting voters know just who's behind Jay Feely.

Our new ad highlights the fact that Jay Feely wants to build more data centers in Arizona so the AI oligarchs who are supporting his campaign can get even richer.

🚨New poll shows Sam Forstag can beat his AI industry funded Republican opponent🚨 That’s why Guardrails is upping our spend in this district to $780k to show that Democrats can take on the AI industry and win.

This past quarter, Anthropic's PAC gave over $250,000 to members of Congress in both parties. Now they're trying to write the laws to regulate themselves. Same old story of corporations buying allies in Congress so they can get what they want while the rest of us pay the price.

It's actually worse than this sounds -- all $200k of new money is just interest from their bank. Zero new donations.
Leading the Future, the AI super PAC, raised just $200,000 in the third quarter, per new FEC filing. We reported this month that a $25 million donation from Greg Brockman never materialized.

Leading the Future isn’t just toxic with voters, it’s toxic with its own donors. First OpenAI’s President backed away from a commitment to give another $25M, then their only Dem donor said he regrets supporting them. Now their filing shows the money is drying up altogether.

Typical Big AI behavior: "The rules don't apply to us and we're entitled to operate in the shadows". 80% of Americans disagree and that's why their donors are running for the hills and their vendors and candidates don't want to be publicly associated with them.
A consulting agency in Nevada has received millions of dollars from one of the biggest pro-AI super PAC networks ahead of November’s midterms. The problem? The company doesn’t seem to exist. wired.com/story/the-biggest-…

This is the kind of bold ambitious AI agenda that all candidates should be putting forward. Voters are looking for leadership on this issue and want candidates who make it clear that they'll stand up to the AI industry.

Leading the Future was started to scare candidates from speaking out in favor of AI regulation. Instead, it's become so politically toxic its own donors don't even want to be associated with it.

Democrats, candidates endorsed by LTF specifically.... what are you waiting for? “Ron, if he had to do that over again, he wouldn’t make that donation [to Leading the Future],” Carney said in an exclusive interview with Decoded, referring to the pro-AI industry super PAC"

NEW POLL with @GuardrailsNow: Voters in Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio say they are less likely to vote for a candidate who takes money from AI companies. On net, that penalty is larger than the penalty for voting to cut billions from Medicaid.

AI companies claim they are curing cancer and bringing about a future of abundance. But you can learn a lot by listening to everything they say, not just the utopia part. OpenAI's own definition of AGI is "highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work." That sounds a lot more like dystopia to me.
Why do people hate AI money in politics and not trust AI companies? Maybe because the companies themselves are telling us their product will take our jobs. Our spokesperson former Indeed CEO Chris @hyams lays out what OpenAI's mission is in their own words.

Just how toxic is AI money? New polling w/ @DataProgress shows 3/4 of voters less likely to support a candidate backed by an AI super PAC, a bigger impact on vote share than a candidate who voted to cut billions from Medicaid or supports a nationwide abortion ban. More below 👇
