The UK’s Seventh Carbon Budget level should be set at 535 MtCO2e, an 87% reduction against 1990 levels.
This country has a prosperous and secure future ahead.
The fossil fuel age is over – it’s time to electrify the United Kingdom.

It's lovely when a talented group of PhD students grow your scatty idea into a excellent report!
A great read for anyone interested in the impacts of weather on the UK power system in the last year.
We’re excited to publish the first ever State of the Climate for the UK Energy Sector report, which provides an overview of how weather impacted the UK's energy industry between January 2023 and April 2024.

A nice back to work present to see this exciting piece of work online! Huge congratulations to @thruggles for leading a very cool study.
As USA-based example of how Planning highly reliable systems necessitates about 40 years of weather data.

Exciting new work from Josh Giddings @_RachelJames @TheCrownEstate and me on how a more distributed UK wind fleet could help:
- reduce persistent low and high generation
- reduce freq and intensity of big wind ramps.
- provide more consistent generation
iopscience.iop.org/article/1…
The good news: Currently proposed wind farms (the green in the middle panel above) help a lot with the currently faced challenges in wind power variability.
The intriguing news: The impacts of climate change are very small compared to the impacts of changing wind distribution!
1 year ago today I started my fellowship at Newcastle!
That went a bit quick.🤯
In my first year here I've gained some amazing new colleagues, did some science, and my week 1 pot plant is still alive!
Roll on the next four. I'd just appreciate if they went a bit slower...

Proud to be part of the new #ClimateAmbassadors scheme announced by @educationgovuk
The scheme aims to help all nurseries, schools and colleges in England have climate action plans in place by 2025. But we need volunteer experts to help make it happen climateambassadors.org.uk
