Today, @POTUS issued a statement in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of HUD’s Housing Voucher Program, a cornerstone of federal housing assistance that supports millions of families.

The text is below: The White House Washington October 16, 2024 I extend my warmest greetings to all those gathered in our Nation's Capital to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program. Since it was created in 1974, the HCV Program has served as our country's largest rental assistance program, providing millions of families with access to affordable housing in communities of their choice. Thanks to the thousands of Public Housing Agency partners who administer this program and the private market landlords who participate in it, individuals and families are receiving housing and resources, resulting in better health, employment, and educational outcomes. My Administration has worked alongside the Department of Housing and Urban Development to build upon these efforts and ensure that Americans have a safe and affordable place to live. We secured federal rental assistance for over 100,000.....

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination in federal programs based on race, color, or national origin. On the 60th anniversary of this law, HUD recommits to our work to enforce Title VI and ensure fair, equitable access to HUD services for all.

As summer begins, HUD is taking action to ensure Public Housing Authorities know the steps they can immediately take to reduce the threat of extreme heat for their residents. ☀️🏠 Read more about the new guidance: hud.gov/press/press_releases…
How Can Public Housing Authorities (PHA) Protect Public Housing Residents from Extreme Heat? Create cooling spaces in common areas for residents: PHAs can use HUD funds to create cooling spaces in common areas for residents. They can use HUD funds to purchase air conditioning and cooling equipment, to retrofit spaces, or for activities like weatherizing a building. Grant relief to households to cover utility expenses for cooling their homes: HUD’s new notice clarifies that PHAs can increase families’ utility allowances, when requested, for the use of air conditioning during periods of severe or extreme heat. PHAs can start providing this relief immediately to all families who live in public housing.
