MASTER THREAD - AI USE CASES: HY CREDIT HEDGE FUND 📌 🧵
This is a living master thread of how I’ve been using AI for long/short HY credit investing. Albeit much is probably applicable more broadly.
I use Claude, Claude Code + MS add-ins on Windows with usual finance/credit products: e.g. Bloomberg, Octus, 9Fin.
I’d split into the following buckets: simple python programs/automations (AI mainly for initial build), Claude Projects, Claude BBG connected excel construction & skills, Bloomberg Quant (probably the biggest “AI unlock”), self-contained HTML apps and finally end-to-end workflows utilising all of the above.
Issues addressed: accessing/using data from BBG, parsing, compressing and formatting content for optimum Claude consumption. Creating context for Claude re. HY credit trading levels and individual issuers (which are often private).
NB: I’m a HY credit analyst/investor. I can’t code. I am not an AI expert. There are almost certainly easier ways of constructing what I’ve done. If you’d like to consult with me or offer feedback - comments/DMs welcome. Here to help and learn. Please pass on if you think people will find helpful.
Podcast app feature💡: while listening to a podcast, all hands free via voice: I wanna pause and discuss what I’ve just heard with an LLM which is “listening alongside” me. Can someone do this @ApplePodcasts or @spotifypodcasts, happy to take only small cut of royalties ty xox
I’ve thus far resisted wading in on Arini. (My future job prospects far too fragile). But quick one: he was not ever a “distressed” trader and it was not a “distressed” fund. Owning distressed paper doesn’t make you a distressed fund.
Arini, the hedge fund started by ex-Credit Suisse distressed trader Hamza Lemssouguer, launched in 2022 with about $1 billion in AUM
The fund grew to run roughly $22 billion, with their flagship vehicle managing $7.5 billion as of July 2026. About 33% of fund vehicles are in CLOs, and another $4 billion raised for direct lending
The fund's strategy was simple. Make bets on highly distressed businesses to extract premium yield vs. the market.
While most credit managers lean towards being highly diversified due to the asymmetric payouts in debt markets, Arini took a different approach by taking concentrated levered bets on their positions
This worked until it doesn't, and this year has been a rough journey for the fund. Bloomberg recently reported that their flagship fund is -26% YTD through October 2026
Here are the 3 positions where Arini has lost the most dollars.
1. Altice International
Altice International is Patrick Drahi's holding company for telecom operations in Portugal, DR and Israel. It carried roughly €8.9bn of senior secured debt and €675mm of senior notes against €1.5bn of LTM EBITDA.
The two crown jewel assets in the business were Altice Caribbean (DR business) and the Portugal subsidiary. The two combined generated 75% of revenue and 80% of EBITDA for the entire business.
In November 2025, both of these were moved out of the restricted group. Altice Caribbean was designated to be an unrestricted subsidiary, and the company then raised €750 million of third-party capital secured against the unpledged assets
In July 2026, Altice then moved to sell the HOT Mobile Israel business for €356 million, leaving nothing of substance behind for the lenders.
Altice International's secured 2028 and 2029 bonds fell 6-8 points in the mid-60s, and the €675 million of senior notes fell 14 points to 16 cents on the dollar. By October, even the senior secured bonds were trading below 50 cents.
The lender group sent a default notice on 2028 notes, claiming that the €5 billion of intercompany loans and the unrestricted designations extracted substantially all value out of the business, and Altice International never made the change of control offer that would refinance the debt
By August, Arini and Silver Point were fighting other lenders for priority in the capital structure. Negotiating group also includes Diameter, Invesco, King Street, Sona and Elliott Management
2. Aston Martin
Arini owned the distressed car company's 10% senior secured notes due 2029. In July 2026, Aston borrowed £550 million from HPS in the form of a £450 million SONIA + 675 senior term loan and a £100 million delayed draw term loan.
The HPS loan was secured on assets placed in a newly created unrestricted subsidiary, while the existing notes that Arini sat in were secured by a pledge over the operating company's shares.
Aston Martin is currently a cash-flow-negative business with £340 million of cash against £250 million of LFCF burn per year. Shareholders have added £2 billion of equity since 2020, and the company recently sold its F1 team stake and naming rights for £156 million combined.
By October, the secured notes that Arini invested in were trading at 47 cents on the dollar
3. Brightspeed
In 2022, Apollo bought Lumen's legacy copper phone business for $7.5 billion with the plan of building fiber passings.
By 2026, it was clear that the deal assumptions were far too lofty, with actual revenue per home passing sitting at roughly 33% of the original budget
Operating cash flow was -$2.2 billion in 2025, and cash balance at the company fell from $2.4 billion at year-end to $1.2 billion in June 2026
By 2Q26, the company issued a going concern warning. Reportedly, Apollo and PJT attempted to raise an ABS tranche secured by fiber subscription cash flows that would rank ahead of the existing lenders but struggled to find any buyers
Per reporting from the Wall Street Journal, Apollo confirmed that they are not willing to add more capital in a business that likely needs to raise an additional $3 billion to get through 2027
The Financial Times reported that Arini held substantial exposure in the company, but the tranche of debt held isn't public. Regardless, the company's debt has traded down significantly and Arini is feeling the pain of unrealized losses from their position
Based on the latest reporting, there have been rumors that a Chapter 11 filing could come as soon as December of this year.
Never in the history of X content has so much time and effort been poured into parody which so, so few will find funny

An unappreciated side effect of the SaaS-pocalypse, deluge of hyper-scaler issuance and DC/neocloud HY bonds… is this ⬇️ has infected the formerly staid HY market too
What some tech bro was tweeting used to be a humorous sideshow for credit investors, not anymore!

I don't think it's a FinX / retail thing
I think PMs are just as susceptible
The issue is the sheer volume of information and the (perceived) need to process it in real-time
It started in 2020 when everyone went terminally online and it's only gotten worse as more investment convos have moved onto X
X on net is an incredibly powerful platform, but it's changed the way news gets processed in real-time and limbic systems weren't built for it
Pair that w/ algos and you've got a cocktail of volatility around every event
Lots of hedge funds and macro PMs got blown out during October
And the volatility is only going to increase as people outsource more investment thinking & judgment to AI
The under-underwritten thesis (b/c it was outsourced to AI) will crumble under the weight of a panicked limbic system every time
The REAL quiz is not the new frontier model release or standing up compute but beating each other to the next jumbo IG credit deal
Point of order for the amateur detectives here: We got a good thing going. Let’s not ruin it. IYK 🤫 Anonymity provides more artistic license. Also I’ll probably get fired.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION IN THIS MATTER 🤝🫡

Amazing how many distressed credit guys have spent their careers asking “does this business have a reason to exist” without stopping to question if they themselves have a reason to exist.
PASC-AI-L’s WAGER: long only credit investor edition
There is no ASI
> non-believer. Feel very smart and smug. Unfortunately no-one but me remembers how right I was. Credit market implodes, all my sht cos go to zero as well.
> believer. Feel quite credulous. No worse look in credit than bullish and wrong. Everyone remembers. My AI bonds go to zero. Fortunately everything else blows up too.
Artificial Super Intelligence ✅
>non-believer. Must stop being contrarian for sake of it. ASI kills all my sht cos. The ASI knows I was a heretic and dooms my bloodline to eternal peasantry.
>believer. I fxyzing knew it! Bears sound smart, bulls make mo… well ASI executed a drop-down of itself and made active credit investing redundant. Join the permanent underclass.
“Ollie WTF does this mean for $CRWV credit spreads?!”
Erm well…

Silly analysis.
Robot RAM needs will exceed everything else on Earth, as you need the robots to be on physical substates in order to shape atoms.
Super intelligence needs will vastly exceed that, but ~100% of SI will be deep space compute. Obviously.
Quick reminder for those at the back:
>Compute prices go up. Look at… oil curve backwardation BEARISH
>If compute prices fall. This is obviously VERY BEARISH
>If XYZ doesn’t raise new capital, they need more capital. This is BEARISH.
>If they do raise new capital, this is a sign they needed it + supply. BEARISH.
>if Nvidia don’t backstop you, BEARISH
>NVIDIA do backstop you, that’s because you needed it VERY BEARISH
>SpaceX biz knocking lights out. Out competing you. BEARISH.
>SpaceX biz falters. VERY BEARISH.
>Lab ARR growth decelerates. Less AI monetisation. BEARISH.
>Lab ARR re-accelerates. Opensource more compute intensive so also BEARISH.
>DC construction on track, supply glut VERY BEARISH
>DC delays, stranded compute also VERY BEARISH
I don’t make the rules.
WIFE: Baaaabe let’s do something this weekend!
> I’m sorry honey I can’t. I have to work. It’s carnage out there.
W: it looks like you’re making cartoons and listening to that f-ng song again
> It’s… it’s work adjacent, you wouldn’t understand
OMFG who did this?! Sent in to me anon. Can’t even take any credit.
Music video. Sound on. Happy Friday 🔊
Pilot episode success has resulted in full commissioning. After many hours of consultation with the writers, voice artists and animation team at Geezer Media we have decided to go for a weekly release schedule. The much anticipated episode 2 is rumoured to drop Wednesday.
