Today #BurkeChem students practiced recognizing isotopes and writing atomic/isotope notation by interpreting and making models(some stations pictured here). ⚛️ Retro-active props to whoever suggested at @ChemEd2019 to use tinier beads for electrons! #iteachchem @OPS_Burke
Champs of this morning's Electron Configuration Relay in AP Chem! Owners of the class "H" trophy for a day. #BurkeChem @OPS_Burke
Tried something different for density w/ gen chem- made 4 stations where students have clear, practical tasks that match example calcs we had- and when students ✅ w/me, I can quickly stamp their good work or coach them on what to retry. Went pretty well! #BurkeChem #iteachchem
#BurkeChem is working hard this week on precision in measuring- a great review was the activity @KatyDornbos made- quick check back, boosted confidence in 20 min.
Next up: Density labs

Students need all kinds of teachers.
- The extroverts who bring energy.
- The introverts who lead with quiet thoughtfulness.
- The serious teachers who bring structure and focus.
- The silly teachers that put students in a state of relaxed alertness.
- The spontaneous teachers who model a creative spirit.
- The organized teachers who bring clarity and consistency.
Part of education is learning how to work with, learn from, and relate to people who are different from ourselves.

Ended AP Chem with a bang this year- last day with seniors, we checked out the stoich and exothermicity of acetylene combustion outside. 😁🤯🎇

High school English teacher explains why he crashes out over the most frustrating thing students do:
Whenever you're feeling down, just remember: you're still good, you haven't been crushed by air pressure yet! 💪🏻

Aviation 1/2, Aviation Maintenance 1/2 & Aviation History Students had a fantastic time touring @sac_aero! Students had the opportunity to see history coursework come to life! Highlights included the SR-71, F-117 Nighthawk, B-25 Mitchell, a painting from Offutt, & Apollo Capsule!
With fewer snow days this year, had time to bring back the DOUBLE Repl. CHALLENGE!! Get a look at these #precipitateproud #BurkeChem students:
Goal: out of the 30+ solns set out, predict 4 combos- 2 with and 2 w/o precipitates. They put solubility rules to work!
More #precipitateproud #BurkeChem students & some of the available solutions.
So, you know those jingles that just live in your head rent-free until the end of time? One of those for me, as a teacher, is the Glade commercial's "Plug it in, plug it in."
I realized today my seniors had ZERO reference when I sing that part as we plug # s into equations. 😂
For everyone's benefit, I present to you this mash-up of commercials with that jingle for reference, so you, too, may annoy your students in perpetuity with out-dated jingles. I definitely played this in class today. #APchem #Burkechem @OPS_Burke

Wharton researchers gave nearly 1,000 high school math students access to ChatGPT during practice problems
Result: chatGPT is the perfect trap.
Look at the red bars.
Students with ChatGPT crushed their practice sessions.
The basic ChatGPT group solved more problems and those on the "tutor" version did even more.
Now look at the gray bars. That's the exam.
No AI allowed.
The ChatGPT group scored 17% worse than kids who practiced with zero technology.
And the fancy tutor version?
No better than working alone.
The researchers called AI a "crutch."
When they analyzed what students actually typed into ChatGPT, most of them just wrote - “What’s the answer?”
The kicker: students who used ChatGPT believed it hadn't hurt their learning.
They were confidently wrong.
This is the AI trap in education.
Outsourcing your thinking.
Of course, lots of half-baked AI literacy curricula being rolled out in schools now
Let’s of course ignore that basic literacy (the ability to read) is possible for <50% of 8th graders

Year 2 with this demo, and I think we got an even better selection of salts! Deep purple found after class with sodium carbonate- will note for next year. #APchem #BurkeChem
Pictured: salts hydrolysis with universal indicator
Took @welchchem 's fantastic demo idea and turned it into interactive notes. We did #1, 2 first, then each group dissolved 2 salts, compiled data, and we came back to do #3. Also got to discuss complex ions with the Al+3, it was a great demo! #APchem
*TT's not in order.
Didn't take stu pics today, but #Burkechem AP students rocked their titrations today in the Ka of Weak Acids lab. Best part of this lab from @FlinnScientific is it's a natural lead into Buffers and half equivalence points, coming up next!
Today was one of the better episodes in doing Flinn's Cobalt Complex Ion demo- and perfect for introducing LeChat. to #APchem today. Everything shifted beautifully, students made connections before we ever took notes. #iteachchem
