Trickle down is a lie and deregulating the financial system won't help people. It's always fun to share home truths on the news.
"The chancellor mentioned several measures yesterday to deregulate the financial sector... deregulation is not going to lead to the sort of growth that will benefit ordinary people... trickle down just doesn't work" Hannah Dewhirst from @PositiveMoneyUK

Absolutely. By standing up to big bank & City lobbyists Chancellor John Healey had made a welcome break with his predecessors, but as the cost of living crisis rages on, it's disappointing to see him leave billions on the table positivemoney.org/uk/update/…
Increase in tax on banks will be VERY popular - @IPPR polling from last year found 62% support amongst voters. Chancellor just announced increase in bank surcharge from 3% to 6%. For context, it used to be 8%. Feels they could have gone further but step in right direction

Yes, very disappointing to see Chancellor John Healey leave billions on the table during a cost of living crisis; positivemoney.org/uk/update/…
A 3% extra temporary bank surcharge is rather feeble given the astronomical scale of the profits UK banks have been making - the big four made £29bn in the first six months of 2026 alone. #Budget2026

How we fight inflation doesn't just matter for the economy. It matters for democracy. If government decisions leave people poorer, more indebted and less secure, we risk deepening the conditions that have emboldened the far-right. 🔗 My article for the @FT. Link below.

Guess who❓ "The question was whether to levy a windfall tax on bank profits. Naturally, the banks strongly opposed this; but the fact remained they had made large profits as a result of high interest rates rather than better service to the customer." 👜Mrs Margaret Thatcher

This is the power of big finance *still* in action; positivemoney.org/uk/publica… It's why no Chancellor has decided to #TaxTheBanks - yet - despite years of record-breaking profits. Let's hope Healey breaks the mould & listens to 100,000+ people tomorrow 🙏 bit.ly/TaxTheBanks

No rent controls under Burnham so everyone is going to get poorer year on year £21 savings on beans and potatoes isn’t gonna save anyone from an extra £500+ spend on rent

HSBC quarterly pre-tax profits surge 32% to $9.6bn (£7.14bn). Banks receive bailouts, subsidies, pay measly return to savers, hike charges, rely on the state as lender of the last resort but threaten retaliation if taxed. Must levy windfall tax news.sky.com/story/major-len…

"Billions can be freed by ending hidden subsidies to banks." 👏 #TaxTheBanks 💰👉 bit.ly/TaxTheBanks
Ahead of tomorrow's budget statement. Here’s how the UK chancellor can raise the billions needed to improve the quality of life of millions by addressing tax and fiscal anomalies. There is no shortage of money. All that is needed is political will. leftfootforward.org/2026/09/…

NEW: While banks are making over a BILLION POUNDS A WEEK - the rumored budget budget bank tax would raise just £1.8bn a year from them. The chancellor is right to tax the banks - but should he go even further?🧵

This is so intelligent, I want to cry: The 140 seats won by the student opposition against Serbia's nationalist government party will be taken up not by students, but by academics, professors & public figures from pre-chosen pool of 250 experts, selected by student plenums.

Beware of finance industry lobbying. It hired PwC (the firm that delivers dud audits) to produce a report, claiming that UK banks face highest rates of tax. The report included taxes not borne by banks. Omitted countries that levy higher rates of taxes. theguardian.com/uk-news/2026…

Major banks have made tens of billions in additional profits as interest rates have risen in recent years. At the same time, millions of people are facing higher mortgage payments, rising rents and ongoing cost-of-living pressures. There is a clear opportunity for the Government to tax bank windfall profits and raise up to £15 billion each year for our public services. That's why I've signed @RichardBurgon's motion, calling on the Government to introduce a tax on bank windfall profits ahead of next week's Budget.
