On October 8, Harris Beach Murtha hosted a hybrid program in partnership with the American Bar Foundation featuring Laura Beth Nielsen, Research Professor at the American Bar Foundation and Professor of Sociology at Northwestern University. Colleagues had the opportunity to participate both in person from the Hartford office and virtually.
During the presentation, “Representations of Vengeance, Justice, Expertise, and Emotion in True Crime Podcasts,” Professor Nielsen shared her research examining how popular true crime podcasts create narratives around crime, culpability and punishment, and how those narratives can shape listeners’ understanding of justice. The program was well attended and sparked conversation around the intersection of popular culture, law and justice and how stories about crime can influence the way we think about culpability and punishment.
The event was sponsored by the Council on Inclusion and Engagement in collaboration with Andy Corea, Connecticut Fellows State Chair of the American Bar Foundation. ABF Fellows are a global honorary society of attorneys, judges, law faculty and legal scholars whose public and private careers have demonstrated outstanding dedication to the highest principles of the legal profession.
