"Hay una especie de tristeza que surge cuando se sabe demasiado, cuando se ve el mundo como realmente es. Es la tristeza de comprender que la vida no es una gran aventura, sino una serie de pequeños e insignificantes momentos, que el amor no es un cuento de hadas, sino una emoción frágil y fugaz, que la felicidad no es un estado permanente, sino un raro y fugaz atisbo de algo a lo que nunca podremos aferrarnos. Y en esa comprensión hay una profunda soledad". Virginia Woolf

Of course, we are not losing this war. But we are losing people. Because of the Russian attacks, we're losing people and time. It's such a pity, because our children don't have a real life and childhood. Not only children, but all people. That's why we need to end this war as quickly as possible. I hope that our partners, Americans and Europeans, will help us. God bless, our strong soldiers stay strong on the battlefield. It helps me stay strong during any kind of negotiations.

Lo más amable que hace la literatura es recordarte que tus pequeños sentimientos peculiares siempre han existido. Alguien, en algún siglo, se sintió igualmente confundido por el amor, aburrido por la sociedad, cansado de actuar y hambriento de significado.

Hazel nuts were an important part of the diet of the ancient Irish and were quite possibly amongst the first things eaten by our ancestors when they arrived on these shores. And like other Autumn foods, such as the apple, they became a special part of Autumn and Samhain celebrations 🌰🎃 Gathered around a fire unmarried folk would give each of the nuts that they had collected the name of a potential lover and cast them into the flames. The first nut to crack, or that which cracked the loudest, would reveal the name of their future love 🔥🍂

Young people actively hate AI. My two younger daughters are 19 and 18, both at universities - one in the UK the other in Italy. Through them, I happen to know quite a few kids their age. And ALL OF THEM seem to universally hate AI. To them it's "something old people invented that we now have to deal with... as if climate change wasnt enough" AI is cringe. When they introduce me to their friends, they literally say "heyya, meet my dad, he's a software engineer but nonono, NOT IN AI, dont worry, hahah". They hate it for flooding their social feeds with slop, ruining music, taking phone scams to the next level, also destroying careers & devaluing their hobbies - why become an architect, this skill is about to become worthless? Why learn a musical instrument if session musicians are already obsolete? The outcome is interesting, though - they're spending less and less time on public social, meeting up IRL, moving their online lives into private group chats with actual verified friends. TikTok and Reels are increasingly cringe-something for old dudes. Which, I guess, might be a net positive after all...

The most radical thing you can do to rebel against this emerging post-literate, brain-slop-world we are entering is read long, complicated books on a daily basis. The ability to pay attention for long periods will be one of the most valuable and rare skills of the future.

It could only be 5🌟 for me. Autumn has long been my favourite season. I’ve never been to Sussex - until now. So enjoyed being immersed in my tour and sharing her memories and experiences, which I see imprinted within her fabulous writing over the years.

I believe in re-reading favorite books at different stages of life. The words remain the same, but we don’t. What once felt distant can suddenly feel deeply personal. What once seemed obvious can reveal us an entirely new meaning. The same passages hit differently. The book hasn’t changed. But our capacity and perspective to see it has.
