If you have ever heard Near-Death Experiencers talk about the future they see on earth, you’ll understand why I find these AI concerns very real.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's message to everyone using Claude or ChatGPT at home: "I won't lie to you. There are real dangers."
Amodei was asked what he would say to an ordinary person using AI at home, someone like the aunt of his interviewer, Jo Ling Kent.
He started by naming the mood:
"Look, my message is there's a lot of fear right now."
From there, he took that fear head-on with three points: the benefits are real, the dangers are real, and you should get a say in what happens next.
First, the benefits:
"First of all, as always, this is a great technology and it has lots of positive uses. So let's just start with that. You know, we have hundreds of millions of people using our technology every week to do wonderful things."
He points to messages that land in his inbox regularly:
"Every week I get an email from someone who says this, you know, I was talking to Claude and Claude diagnosed this disease that my doctors had missed. I get emails like this every week. So, let's not forget that."
Then came the part he says too much of the industry wouldn't admit:
"But in terms of the dangers of the technology, I won't lie to you. There are real dangers."
He calls out his own industry directly:
"And I think for too long the industry lied to people about the fact that this technology had risk. The idea was that they would present it as positive as [possible]. We've never done that, but too much of the industry did that."
For Amodei, the fix starts with honesty and extends to the person at home:
"And so it starts with telling the truth. And the truth is there are risks. Risks are real. But also, you have a say in how these risks are addressed."
He explains what that looks like in practice:
"We're doing the best we can to work with government to create the proper oversight of this technology to give voters and elected officials a say in how this technology is deployed. And we want to work with those folks as much as we can."
His goal is for everyday users to get both the benefits and a voice in the decisions:
"I want everyone to feel like they're appreciating the incredible benefits of the technology, but also they have a say in their voice and in their vote in determining how this technology is deployed."
And @DarioAmodei rejects the idea that AI's future belongs to a handful of people:
"This isn't a decision for a few people alone. This is a decision for everyone."
He's also clear about how much is riding on it:
"But it is an important decision. I won't lie that the stakes aren't high."
Well said! ❤️
How can you NOT believe in God when octopuses dream and otters have a favorite rock they carry around in a little skin pocket and cows have best friends and bees are out there communicating the coordinates of flowers through dancing and they have regional dialects?
Cats are purring at frequencies associated with bone healing? Forests get absolutely incinerated and respond by growing flowers? Dolphins literally invent names for themselves and yell them across the ocean? Penguins are waddling around Antarctica looking for the perfect rock to give their partner?
CROWS REMEMBER YOUR FACE. THEY TELL OTHER CROWS ABOUT YOU. THEY TELL THEIR CHILDREN ABOUT YOU. YOU CAN HAVE GENERATIONAL BEEF WITH A BIRD. I NEED YOU TO UNDERSTAND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS.
Goats have accents. Rats laugh when you tickle them. Elephants mourn their dead. Whales make songs and then OTHER WHALES LEARN THE SONG and suddenly everybody across the ocean is singing the new song.
Monarch butterflies are born knowing how to fly thousands of miles to a place they have never been.
Sea turtles hatch out of an egg, immediately sprint toward an ocean that they have never seen, disappear into it for like 3 decades and then somehow come back to the same beach they hatched on.
Birds can see colors that we humans can’t see. There are colors out there right now that we don’t even get to know about.
There are sea slugs that eat algae and use the chloroplast/chlorophyll and then are just like…photosynthesizing. And they’re super adorable.
There are mushrooms communicating underground. There are seeds sitting in the dirt for decades like “no actually I will wait. It’s fine.”
Squirrels plant trees because they forget where they put their snacks. Relatable.
A CATERPILLAR GOES INTO A LITTLE BAG THAT IT CREATES ITSELF AND DISSOLVES MOST OF ITS BODY INTO ORGANIC GOO AND REARRANGES ITSELF, GROWS WINGS AND THEN LEAVES. WHY IS THIS NOT MORE BEAUTIFULLY TERRIFYING TO PEOPLE??
And you’re telling me a tiny acorn knows how to become a huge tree? It just has a blueprint inside itself?
Your body started as ONE CELL.
ONE.
And that cell divided itself into a brain that can think about its own existence and eyes that can look at stars and hands that can hold somebody else’s hands and a heart that runs on electricity without you even asking it to?
The iron in our blood was made inside a star??
We are walking around on a wet rock covered in bioluminescent oceans and singing whales and laughing rats and birds holding lifelong grudges and flowers exploding out of fire and somehow we’re supposed to act like this is a normal place to live?
We’re supposed to act like this is all just a random, accidental sequence of events?
If you are attending the IANDS conference make sure to attend our panel on Saturday. What a treat to be on stage with these fabulous creators. You can also watch conference via livestream. See IANDS.org for more info.
This reminds me of meditation: ignoring thoughts as they keep jumping in.

🚨WOW!!!
A mother suffered a medical emergency going 60mph, totally unresponsive, with her little boy strapped in the backseat...
...a total stranger saw what was happening and used HIS OWN CAR to pin her SUV against the barrier and bring it to a stop, SAVING THEIR LIVES!!!
His name is Paul Jackson.
On Tuesday, Paul was driving down I-5 near Fife when he saw a white SUV cut across THREE lanes of traffic and start bouncing off the concrete divider...
Over and over.
He pulled up next to it and looked inside.
The driver was out cold, eyes rolled back in her head, completely unresponsive at highway speeds.
In the backseat he saw a TERRIFIED little boy strapped into his car seat.
"Somebody had to do something."
So Paul did what almost nobody would do: he used his own car to gently pin her SUV against the barrier and slowly squeezed it to a stop.
He slowly and carefully... glided her car to safety.
Then he jumped out, threw the car in park, got the little boy to safety, and stayed with the mother until EMTs arrived.
Paul was on his way to pick up his wife's BIRTHDAY CAKE when all this happened.
He sent her pictures from the scene as proof he wasn't making up an excuse for being late. 😂
"Had to have proof for my wife."
When asked why he did it, Paul didn't hesitate:
"God put me there to do that, I knew I was going to stop this vehicle no matter what."
THIS IS THE AMERICA I KNOW!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

When she said “one chocolate chip cookie,” I wasn’t expecting a whole situation 😂
One minute of prep, one minute in the microwave, and somehow it turns into this giant, gooey, warm chocolate chip cookie that looks like it could feed a small village. She even admitted it’s a “big old chocolate chip cookie.”
Perfect for those late-night “I just need one cookie” moments… even if that one cookie ends up being the size of three.
Would you try this or are you team “just make the whole batch”?

The largest and sharpest image ever taken of the Andromeda galaxy — otherwise known as M31.
It is the biggest Hubble image ever released and shows over 100 million stars, thousands of star clusters in a section of the galaxy’s disc stretching across over 40 000 light-years.
