Set in the time of Cleopatra VII, Origins provides one of the most authentic presentations of Hellenistic Egypt in modern media. I discuss what the game did right, and the balancing act of "accuracy" and "fun"

“A History of Ancient Egypt” - M. Van de Mieroop
A comprehensive overview of Ancient Egypt’s 3,000+ year long history, and a perfect appetizer for my own upcoming visit to the region.
As an FYI, I don’t use any AI tools in the production of the show or my research.
The flaws of pronunciation, writing, and other elements of the podcast are entirely human in origin and are through no fault other than my own.
Heads up fellow Chicagoans, a new exhibit focusing on Cleopatra and Alexandrian artifacts is en route to the Field Museum in Feb. 2027, strangely enough less than two months after I visit Alexandria in Egypt. Perfect timing I suppose:

While only tangentially related to Halloween, one of the most interesting cases of syncretism in Hellenistic/Roman Egypt is Hermanubis, a blend of the Greek Hermes (Greco-Roman clothing, the Caduceus staff) and the Egyptian Anubis (the dog's head).

As we’re approaching the holiday season, why not get yourself or a loved one a Seleucid-inspired shirt from ImperialWares.com (@ImperialWares)?
I don’t know how well this would fly at Hanukkah, but every purchase goes back to supporting the podcast!
You can pick up the shirt on the Imperial Wares Etsy page below

To Greek and Roman observers, few images stereotypically represented the Nabataeans as much as the camel.
This silver denarius was minted in 58 BC to commemorate the “victory” of the prateor M. Aemilius Scaurus over King Aretas II, who is shown kneeling next to his camel.
Eunus of Apameia, a slave who was a part-time holy man and part-time magician, he claimed divine inspiration from a Syrian goddess and led the first great slave revolt against Rome (135-132 BC), taking the title of "King Antiochus" and claiming Sicily for his liberated subjects.
Now officially married and recovered from post-wedding illness, I am back to working on the show
The Assassin’s Creed discussion will be released in the next handful of days, and I’m in the thick of Roman land reforms for episode 127!

Hellenistic and Roman-era portraits of Libyans from the "Sanctuary of Cyrene". These were most likely high-status and wealthy Libyans who were integrated into Cyrenean society. It shows that foreign origins and customs did not prevent social integration (from Hodos 2006)
