Dragons In The Clouds by David Blair is an enchanting and imaginative novella that whisks readers away into a fantastical world where dragons soar and legends come to life. Blair—a 50-year-old American author—offers a delightful blend of adventure, magic, and heartfelt storytelling. First published in November 2018, the tale unfolds as a father, Ray Evans, returns home from a business trip with a toy dragon for his daughter, Reilly, and spins a bedtime story that bridges the mundane and the mythical. The narrative transports readers to the Kingdom of Albion, a land where dragons once roamed freely until a royal decree ordered their annihilation due to the threat posed by vicious meat-eating species. Enter Merlinius, a wise and compassionate wizard who defies the king’s command to protect a family of plant-eating dragons, casting a spell of weightlessness to send them into the clouds. This clever twist—where dragon fire mimics lightning and their roars echo as thunder—offers a whimsical explanation for natural phenomena, sparking the imagination of its audience. The plot thickens with the arrival of Odius, Merlinius’s power-hungry apprentice, who uses the same spell to ally with the carnivorous dragons, igniting a sky-bound battle that threatens the kingdom’s fate. At the heart of the story are David, a brave boy who befriends a baby dragon named Rago, and their bond, which drives a tale of loyalty, courage, and hope. Blair’s storytelling shines through his vivid imagery and expressive prose, painting a world that feels both fantastical and tangible. The characters—especially David, Rago, and the Merlin-like Merlinius—are endearing and well-crafted, resonating with readers through their depth and authenticity. The pacing builds from a gentle start to a thrilling climax, balancing action with moments of warmth, like the tender father-daughter framing device. Blair’s influences, including Rod Serling’s "The Twilight Zone" and Charles Dickens’s "A Christmas Carol," lend a subtle paranormal charm and emotional resonance to the work, reflecting his creative roots as a storyteller since age 14. Dragons In The Clouds" excels as a middle-grade fantasy, offering young readers a gateway to adventure while appealing to adults who cherish nostalgic, imaginative tales. Its themes of friendship, standing against injustice, and finding wonder in the everyday elevate it beyond a simple dragon story. Blair’s debut marks him as an author with a knack for weaving magic into accessible, engaging narratives—a promising start that leaves readers eager for more flights of fancy from his pen. Highly recommended for dragon enthusiasts and anyone seeking a quick, uplifting escape into a world where the clouds hold secrets worth discovering. @DavidBlair46320 amzn.to/3C64lgX authoruproar.com/author-davi… barnesandnoble.com/w/dragons… barnesandnoble.com/w/dragons… goodreads.com/book/show/1979… booksamillion.com/p/Dragons-…
