ALT Generously supported by the AHRC, Hidden in Plain Sight will apply advanced technologies in the study of premodern sacred books. It will shed new light on how sacred books, from Jewish Bibles in post-Plague Germany to Islamic amulets in West Africa, have been used, mutilated, entombed and transformed. This will create new protocols for the use of diverse technologies, such as micro-CT scanning, DNA sampling or 3D microscopy, within historical research. A collaboration between the Schools of History and Dentistry at QMUL, alongside Cambridge University Library, the National Library of Wales, and the Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology (Cambridge), the project brings together historians, heritage scientists, librarians, conservators, technicians and curators, presenting a model for inter- and cross-disciplinary work while shedding new light on the transformations of sacred books.
