Your best math manipulative this year costs zero dollars and is already sitting on the carpet. It is the kids. Count eyes by 2s. Ears by 2s. Hands by 2s. Fingers by 5s and 10s. Shoes. Pockets. Buttons. Teeth (good luck). Same standard. Same skip counting. Way more sticky. Why it sticks: 4- to 6-year-olds recall objects better when those objects were paired with a photo of themselves instead of another child (Cunningham et al., 2014, Child Development). Self-relevance changes encoding. And the body matters. Students who physically handled a spinning wheel outperformed students who only watched, with sensorimotor brain regions lighting up later during reasoning (Kontra, Lyons, Fischer & Beilock, 2015, Psychological Science). So, make the anchor chart out of THEIR faces. Skip count THEIR eyes. Graph THEIR shoes. Math stops being a worksheet about strangers and becomes a story about them. #mtbos #iteachhmath #mathchat

Stop buying more counters. Use the children.Five kids, photographed in every decomposition of 5, posted at eye level all year. Decomposing number is THE conceptual achievement of the early grades (Resnick, 1983), and the body makes it stick. Zero dollars. Huge payoff. Kids move through phases on the way to fact mastery: counting, then reasoning strategies, then quick recall (Baroody, 2006). Most flashcards skip the middle phase. Ours are built for it. Launching end of September at mathfactfluencyplayground.co… #mathchat

Goal setting is more than motivation. It helps students become active participants in their own learning. Research on formative assessment shows that when students know the goal, track progress, and identify a next step, learning becomes visible. This Addition Tracker helps young mathematicians say: Here’s what I know. Here’s what I’m practicing. Here’s where I’m going next.Small steps. Clear goals. Growing confidence. Big math thinking. #MathFluency #GoalSetting #FormativeAssessment #ElementaryMath

Here is an idea I saw and started telling all my prek -1st teachers about! Everybody is doing it and loves it. These particular kids are ai (for privacy), but all the real posters in classrooms look like this but with their real kids. Kids should own the room. Not the poster company. Not Pinterest. The kids. Their faces on the number chart. Their names on the word wall. Their work at eye level. It is their room. Let it look like them.

Every strategy card should do three things. 1. Show a fact they already own 2. Put the new fact right underneath it 3. Ask them to find the relationship themselves If the card just tells them the rule, it is a poster. If it makes them notice, it is instruction. Our fact wall will be up by September 30th. My divisor is 5. My quotient is between 6 and 9. What equations could I be?" Notice what that asks kids to do. Not recall. Generate. Justify. Argue. Multiple-solution tasks keep cognitive demand high (Stein, Grover, & Henningsen, 1996). Then ask: how do you know you found them all? We are setting up a math talk wall. It will be ready by Sept. 30th. Get ready.... mathfactfluencyplayground.co…

Remainders are not just the leftover number. 👀 22 ÷ 5 = 4 R 2. But what is the 2? 🏀 Teams: drop it. 🚌 Buses: round up. 🍪 Cookies: keep it. 🎀 Ribbon: split it. Same division. Four answers. 70% of students divide correctly. 23% answer the question (NAEP). Context is the lesson.

Two kids. One fact. 6 x 8. Maya breaks it apart: 5 x 8, plus one more 8. Dev doubles three times: 6, 12, 24, 48. Neither one is "the" way. Both are reasoning. Most of us nod at both and move on. But Rittle-Johnson and Star (2007) found something worth a principal’s attention: students who studied two methods side by side outperformed students who studied the same two methods one after the other. Same content, same time, different arrangement. The comparison IS the lesson. Your walkthrough look-for this week: are two strategies visible at the same time, or is one erased to make room for the next? Sequential is not comparison. And it costs your teachers zero extra minutes to fix. What would you put next to 6 x 8?

Show kids 8 = 3 + 5. Then show 9 = 3 + ___. Don't say "solve." Say: What changed? What stayed the same? That one swap moves them from counting to reasoning. It's called relational thinking, and it's the bridge to algebra. #ElemMath #MathFactFluency
