It's no secret that global energy systems need vast amounts of #storage to maximise renewable energy to achieve full #decarbonization. At #COP29, countries and regions announced the Global Energy Storage and Grid Pledge to increase global energy storage capacity six times above 2022 levels, bringing the target to 1500GW by 2030, alongside increased grid capacity targets. This is the first time that the Conference of the Parties (COP) has brought clean flexibility on to the agenda - growing recognition that without #storage and grid upgrades our climate pledges simply aren't achievable. Storage is key to delivering the COP28 pledge of 3x renewables by 2030 and a #decarbonized UK grid by 2030. #COP29 #COP28 #storage #LDES #LAES #netzero #decarbonization

Exciting News… we’re proud to announce that Highview Power will develop four new 2.5GWh power plants, to deliver 10GWh of long duration energy storage across the UK by 2030. Two of the 2.5GWh plants will deliver more storage than all of the UK’s existing battery storage, using 100% sustainable technology, with a 40-year lifespan. Supported by the UK Government’s new cap and floor mechanism, this marks a key milestone in the journey to achieving a net zero grid by 2030. Scotland & England Lead the Way… our first 2.5GWh plant will be located in Hunterston, Scotland, with a total of four new plants across the UK. Each plant has the capacity to power up to 650,000 homes for over 12.5 hours, a major boost toward ensuring energy security and curbing renewable energy curtailment. Unlocking Investment for a Greener Future… This is just the beginning! Our new plants are part of a broader LDES programme backed by billions of pounds in investment, driven by key partners Centrica, UK Infrastructure Bank and more. Together, we’re not only powering the grid, but also unlocking economic growth. Highview Power is proud to be leading the way in the UK's energy transition! We are thrilled to announce the next phase of our Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) programme with the launch of a 2.5GWh liquid air energy storage (LAES) plant at Hunterston, Ayrshire. The facility will significantly enhance Scotland's energy storage capabilities, delivering five times the country’s current operational battery storage capacity, and play a critical role in stabilising the grid, advancing Scotland's renewable energy production. Highview met with the First Minister, John Swinney, at Scotland House yesterday to discuss the facility, which will be the largest of its kind in the world, with the capacity to power 650,000 homes for 12.5 hours. This landmark project positions Scotland at the forefront of global decarbonisation efforts, providing essential storage for offshore wind and addressing grid constraints. We’re proud to play a vital role in the UK’s journey to net zero and look forward to delivering major investment in Ayrshire, driving economic growth, and creating sustainable jobs across the region. A significant leap forward towards the UK's 2030 targets today, as the government unveils a new investment support scheme to boost long duration electricity storage (LDES) technologies. This is a hugely welcome step which will strengthen the UK’s energy security, create thousands of jobs, and drive the country closer to its clean energy goals. It's great to see the UK Government champion these technologies, which will unlock billions in funding for essential energy storage projects and create investment opportunities by boosting investor confidence. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to position the UK as a leader in renewable energy, following recent investments in carbon capture and the launch of Great British Energy. By expanding energy storage, this will unlock £24 billion in system savings by 2050, helping meet the nation’s ambitious net zero goals while protecting consumers from volatile global gas markets. We are delighted to announce that we have signed a long-term contract with @AXISCADES subsidiary Epcogen, a leader in technology and engineering solutions. Epcogen began Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for Highview Power's Carrington Project, the world’s largest Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) facility, in mid-2022, whilst also performing pre-engineering activities (Process Detailing, Technical Safety, Static, Rotary, Piping, Civil & Structural, Electrical, Instruments, and Telecom) until 2024. CEO and MD of AXISCADES, Mr. Arun Krishnamurthi, said "We are excited to partner with Highview Power on this transformative and pioneering project. This contract represents a significant opportunity to enhance our engineering proficiency and strengthen our commitment to supporting innovative energy solutions that drive sustainability and efficiency. This collaboration is an example of Epcogen and AXISCADES’ combined capabilities in delivering complex engineering solutions. We look forward to contributing to the success of the Carrington Power Project and other future initiatives with Highview Power." “Batteries clearly have their place in the two-four-hour storage market but can’t provide the sort of longer-duration storage as well as the grid-stability services that large industrial customers demand.” Highview Power CEO, Richard Butland. Richard recently spoke to Angela Macdonald-Smith from the The Australian Financial Review on the key role Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) has to play in Australia. Liquid air is amongst the emerging technologies which are not yet deployed in Australia - as they make efforts to overcome the “droughts” in generation that plague supply and affordability in winter, when the wind does not blow, and the sun does not shine. “Highview’s process uses excess energy to cryogenically liquefy and store ambient air in the tanks. When the energy is needed the liquefied air is reheated and run through a steam turbine to return the power to the grid. It has proposed a 12-hour storage plant in the Northern Territory, and has linked with Rio Tinto to examine using the technology at the miner’s operations, with a focus on Western Australia and Queensland.” @FinancialReview subscribers can read the full article here: afr.com/companies/energy/no-… #AlwaysOn #RenewableEnergy #LongDurationEnergyStorage #LiquidAir #Australia #ReshapingRenewables

THE PROBLEMS WE SOLVE... INTERMITTENCY, RELIANCE ON FOSSIL FUELS, CURTALIMENT & GRID STABILITY. Here is our latest infographic, which explains how our liquid air energy storage (LAES) works. LAES captures excess renewable energy helping reduce curtailment, it tackles intermittency by storing energy that can then be released when the win isn't blowing & the sun isn't shining. This provides the grid with stability, improving energy security and helping us reach #NetZero.
