When King Conrad III defeated the Duke of Welf in 1140 and placed Weinsberg under siege, the wives of the besieged castle negotiated a surrender that granted them the right to leave with whatever they could carry on their shoulders. The king allowed them, and leaving everything else aside, each woman took her own husband on her shoulders and carried him out. When the king's soldiers saw what was happening, they said that that was not what had been meant and wanted to put a stop to it. But King Conrad laughed and accepted the women's clever trick. "A king," he said, "should always stand by his word." Through wisdom, these wives save their husbands. #HistoryVille

In 1998, BMW had to recall their original GPS system because male German drivers refused to take directions from a female voice. Taking directions from a woman, essentially in a ā€˜driver’s seat’, challenged their traditional ideas, as they considered women to be less knowledgeable, thereby not trusting the female voice offering directions. #HistoryVille

A Lagos lawyer, Moronfolu Abayomi, was shot dead in a Lagos courthouse at Tinubu Square on August 25, 1923, three months and 15 days after his wedding day. Abayomi's killer was a popular Lagos entrepreneur and "big boyā€, Duro Delphonso, from the renowned Delphonso family. Delphonso was in a legal battle with his insurance company, and the case went to court. The insurance company then hired a young and vibrant lawyer, Barrister Moronfolu Abayomi. As the case proceeded, the young barrister was able to prove clearly that Delphonso committed arson on his home and business in order to defraud the insurance company. On August 25, 1923, when Delphonso was being led out of the court to begin his prison sentence, the convict shot Abayomi with a revolver and turned the same gun and shot himself. Barrister Moronfolu Abayomi died from excessive blood loss while he was in transit to the hospital. The bullet had penetrated his lungs. Delphonso himself was hospitalised, but the Lagos ā€œbig boyā€ refused to be treated and died six days later on August 31, 1923. The Barrister’s young widow, Oyinkansola, was devastated and refused to love any man again until six years later, in 1929, when a young doctor, Kofoworola John Abayomi (who incidentally bore the same surname as her late husband), asked for her hand in marriage. She agreed, and they got married the next year in 1930. They remained married for the next 48 years, until Sir Kofoworola Abayomi’s death on January 1, 1979. He was 82. Lady Oyinkansola Abayomi would live to the ripe old age of 93. The Kofo Abayomi Street in Victoria Island, Lagos, is named in his honour. #HistoryVille #CrimeStories

Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as Nigeria's Federal Commissioner of Finance, coined the name "Naira" by "collapsing" Nigeria, and "Kobo", a corruption of copper because coins were then made of copper, for the nation's new currency. The Naira was introduced on January 1, 1973, replacing the Nigerian pound with an exchange rate of ₦2 to Ā£1 in the United Kingdom and ₦1 to $0.6 in the United States. #HistoryVille

On October 8, 2007, media reports revealed that Nigeria denied Bill Gates’s visa application, despite his being the world’s richest man for the 13th consecutive year, with an estimated fortune of $59 billion. The Nigerian government wanted proof that the billionaire would not overstay his welcome and become a burden on the country's social services. The Microsoft chairman had to get a letter from his bank, and his visa was subsequently approved. Bill Gates turns 71 today. #HistoryVille

In 1952, Mallam Umaru Altine became the first elected Mayor of the Enugu Municipal Council. He held the post until 1958. A Fulani cattle rearer from Sokoto, Mallam Altine, who was married to an Igbo woman, Esther Ozueh, was elected for two terms. In his first term, he had run as a National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) candidate, but in the build-up to the elections for his second term, the NCNC asked him to step down for another candidate, but he refused and was forced to resign from the NCNC. Nevertheless, he ran as an independent candidate and defeated the NCNC candidate, D.T. Inyang, by 117 to 53 votes. In fact, in his ward, he was returned unopposed. Thus, a Fulani man from Sifawa, in the then Sokoto Province, almost 700 miles from the Eastern Region, who had lived in Enugu for less than five (5) years, became the first Mayor of the Eastern Region's capital. As Mayor of Enugu, together with Nnamdi Azikiwe, the Premier of the Eastern Region, Altine hosted Queen Elizabeth II during Her Majesty's official visit to Nigeria in February 1956. #HistoryVille
