Another way to think about Trump announcement today: If he increased US diesel imports from Canada by 4%, he would gain as much fuel as from this Russia deal. But the Canadians are global super-villains, so who wants to buy from them when you could enrich Putin instead?
HREC - Holodomor Research and Education Consortium retweeted
Even if Russia, which is dealing with its own fuel shortage, finds 300,000 tons of diesel to export in order to grant Trump a political favor ahead of the midterms, that will account for just over half a day of American diesel consumption. Not nearly enough to move global prices.

While writing an article about the animals in Maria Prymachenko's work, I decided to write here about her early works from the 1930s, which often get less attention. A thread 🧵
On the humanitarian crisis in Russian-occupied Oleshky:
"The Russian occupation has created and sustained forced dependencies on the occupation regime, which in turn led to rapid humanitarian decline... Russian hubris is the ultimate obstacle for a resolution to the situation in Oleshky. The Kremlin seems to view any coherent action as a sign of weakness, leaving thousands of human lives in the crossfire."
My latest for @TheStudyofWar detailing the catastrophic situation in Russian-occupied Oleshky.
Oleshky is a microcosm of the way Russia occupies. The occupation has created and sustained forced dependencies on the occupation regime, which in turn led to rapid humanitarian decline in the face of a complex military situation and routine Russian mismanagement.
Russian hubris is the ultimate obstacle for a resolution to the situation in Oleshky. The Kremlin unfortunately seems to view any coherent action as a sign of weakness, leaving thousands of human lives in the crossfire.

We're excited to announce that @KarolinaKoziura, Petro Jacyk Postdoctoral Fellow at @CEESMunk, will deliver this year's Toronto Ukrainian Famine Lecture.
She will trace 90 years of transnational Holodomor memory activism, examining how survivors, communities and activists confronted the political silencing and denial of the Famine and worked to reclaim a suppressed past. She will explore how women in particular emerged as key activists in preserving, transmitting and publicly articulating memories of the Famine across generations and borders.

This is a bitter sweet operation! While I’m happy we delivered some food, Russians notice and some people where injured in the action of getting the food but I guess that’s the situation we are! I wish no publicity was giving to this and was under the radar…we need to deliver home to home, better for the safety of Ukranians…under the radar……no one knowing! @WCKitchen #ChefsForUkraine

A Russian strike against the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. A rescue operation is underway: crews are putting out the fire and searching for people who may have been trapped inside. All services are deployed. Today in Kyiv, a pharmaceutical company and gas stations were also attacked; in Dnipro, a business center; and in other cities and regions, civilian facilities, businesses, and communications infrastructure were targeted as well. Sadly, people have been killed… My condolences to their families and loved ones. Russia will definitely face a response to this. And every one of Ukraine’s partners must see from this terror, from these strikes, that supporting Ukraine means truly supporting people’s lives – supporting the principle that terror must never be normalized, anywhere. Russia must be held accountable for all of this and face real consequences. I thank everyone who helps Ukraine!
Excited to be heading to the Danyliw Research Seminar on Contemporary Ukraine (University of Ottawa) to discuss issues in creating and lessons learned in the production of our online course Famine as Genocide: The Holodomor in Ukraine.

Russia destroyed over 10 million Ukrainian books in three months. Think about this figure - over 10 million Ukrainian books
on this topic - statement of PEN Ukraine, @PenUkraine
****
Russia attacks Ukraine every day, killing people and destroying civilian infrastructure. It seeks to turn Ukraine into a wasteland.
The Russian army also seeks to destroy Ukrainian culture. That is why its targets are not only our homes, businesses, power plants, shopping centres, and warehouses. Ukrainian books are also its targets.
On the night of 28 August, Ukrainian publishing houses once again reported that their warehouses had been burned down, along with tens of thousands of books.
According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture, over the summer of 2026 alone, Russia has already destroyed more than 10 million Ukrainian books. This amounts to one-third of Ukraine’s annual book production. These include works by Ukrainian authors as well as books translated into Ukrainian from dozens of foreign languages.
Why does the Russian army destroy Ukrainian books? Because it knows that reading is the foundation of culture and meaning. Books shape our values, our ways of thinking, our cultural memory, our identity, and our sense of community. They are also a foundation of national education — and the new school year in Ukraine begins in just a few days.
Russia is waging war not only against Ukrainians. It is waging war against the very possibility of being Ukrainian. It seeks to destroy Ukrainian identity and Ukrainian self-awareness.
This has happened before, many times. For centuries, the empire killed Ukrainian writers, destroyed Ukrainian books, and sought to deny us the right to speak our own language, read our own literature, and translate works from other literatures into our own language. Russia has done — and continues to do — the same to dozens of other cultures it has subjugated.
We call on the Ukrainian state to support the publishing industry.
We call on Ukrainian citizens to buy Ukrainian books more actively.
We call on the international community to provide Ukraine with modern defensive weapons, particularly those urgently needed to protect Ukrainian skies. We also call for joint efforts to hold representatives of the Russian Federation criminally accountable for committing international crimes.
We call for more consistent engagement of international partners in providing financial and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, including support for Ukrainian publishers and booksellers.
We ask the international community to urgently help Ukraine in its struggle for survival.
Ukraine’s struggle today is not only a struggle for independence. It is also a struggle for our culture.
It is a struggle for culture itself.

The principal Russian war aim, after all, is to make sure that there is no longer a separate Ukraine, and therefore no Ukrainian culture, language or books.
