This isn’t the part of homeschooling that most people want to talk about.
But we do.
Why?
Because talking about this problem is the first step to ending it.

This is why we must always have no-fault divorce. Abusers are masterful at deception and paint an entirely different picture to outsiders.

As conscious parents wanting to honour our children's humanity, we are very intentional about how we relate to this systemic power.
We avoid using it to control them at all costs.
Of course it's not easy, but the key is that we are always stretching ourselves.

Based on what I'm hearing from some state School Superintendents, school boards, governors, and a few colleagues, I just want to clarify Critical Race Theory (CRT) (@AMLE), so the conversations might be more constructive, discussing from knowledge, not myth: amle.org/anti-racist-educati…

Scientific debates don’t happen in the public. Scientists debate other experts constantly in the literature & at conferences.
A hallmark of pseudoscience to bypass the scientific community and go to the public. Don’t be fooled: the “debate” they’re suggesting isn’t scientific.

1/2 "Our schools are failing! Our kids can't read!" have been used to rationalize high-stakes testing, privatization, and now the SOR-branded phonics-for-all campagin. The alarmism often relies on misleading claims about NAEP proficiency levels in particular.

A math teacher points out a lot of the absurdity of what I call the false precision of grades and their meaninglessness and arbitrary evaluation of every little thing (23%? 8%). Sure they have power. But should they?

I am testament that those things are simply not true. Listening does still happen. People still care for each other. People do change. Love still wins.

It used to be that 22% of college students majored in education.
CURRENT numbers are < 4%! 😮
Instead of figuring out why, states and districts are lowering the requirements for becoming a teacher. Then some experts will ‘wonder’ why test scores have been declining. 🙄😕😡

Homeschooling to force a queer child back into the closet will not make that child less queer.

Yes, the pandemic forced many people to homeschool who normally wouldn't, and yes, families of color are homeschooling more. But mask mandates, critical race theory, and gender and sex education also inspired many white families to homeschool who were not already doing so.

I really hate the “No hats, hoods, or headwear,” policies that so many schools enforce. Is that hat stopping that kid from engaging in the lesson?
No.
It's the classic tale of volunteer burnout:
Everyone thought that Anyone could do it, but No-one realized that Everyone wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everyone was upset with Someone because No-one did what Anyone could have done.
Thank you for trying!
