I was a big-government liberal. My consumer reporting found problems I thought only government could fix…
But economists Friedrich Hayek and Ludwig von Mises made me question what I thought I knew about government policy.
@ryanmcmaken of @mises explains their ideas:
Hayek’s Warning We Ignored: Government Planning Doesn’t Fix Economies
Politicians say they can “fix” the economy. But economists Friedrich Hayek and Ludwig von Mises pointed out how government “fixes" lead to bigger problems.

During the Great Depression, the gov't DESTROYED food!
FDR wanted to raise prices for farmers by reducing the supply of food.
It worked, but “People can't eat prices, they have to eat food!” says economist Don Boudreaux.
History shows how gov't often makes things worse:

I’m too shocked, disgusted and angry to really even be commenting at this point, but I will anyway. Andrew was a fan who became a friend. Cam and I just had lunch with him in Forth Worth in June, when he drove from Austin to see my return to the stage after my father’s sudden death in May.
Andrew was a rare person: Genuinely kind just for the sake of it; it quite clearly never occurred to him to expect anything in return. I am haunted and horrified thinking of his final moments, and beyond furious that this was the end the world gave him, the same world that he’d always gone out of his way to make a better place.
We all love you Andrew, and we always will. Your kindness made you a legend.
NEW DETAILS on the murder and attempted beheading of a man at a Round Rock park.
Andrew James Wimsatt sat down on a bench that Monday morning in a plaid blue button-up and shorts. Three minutes later he was dead.
A neighbor's camera had already caught Benedict Ogbodiegwu Jr. leaving his house that morning, walking toward the park with something in his left pocket that detectives say looked like a large knife sticking out.
He stopped for a drink at the water fountain by the basketball court. Then he found Wimsatt.
He came from behind, wrapped his left arm around the man, and started driving the knife into his neck. Wimsatt tried to push him off. He couldn't. He was stabbed several more times before he hit the ground.
Then Ogbodiegwu walked around to his left side, knelt down, put his knee on the dying man's chest, and kept going -- sawing the blade back and forth while it was inside his neck.
He wiped the blade on his shirt and jogged off toward the pool.
Four minutes after he left the park, that same neighbor's camera caught him walking back home, two houses away.
That afternoon he turned up at a McDonald's in a different outfit and left as a passenger in a red SUV. The plate traced back to his father's house, nine-tenths of a mile from the bench.
When detectives showed him a still from the crime scene video, he admitted it was him. Then said he was never at the park. Then said he has a twin. Asked for his twin's name, he had nothing.
Deputies found a trash bag by the garage. Inside: the Honda shirt he was wearing at the murder scene, grey sweatpants with red stains, size 12 Jordans, and a 5.5-inch knife with a wooden handle. The red substance on the blade tested presumptive positive for human blood.
The two men had never met. He apparently decided to just stab a stranger.
In January, Ogbodiegwu was arrested for theft, which was dismissed. In May, arrested for giving police a fake name - also dismissed. Years earlier, he was arrested for theft.
The victim, Andrew Wimsatt, was 62 years old, and an accomplished civil engineer in Texas. He was also an avid nature and wildlife photography enthusiast.
Fox News host @greggutfeld called him “supremely gentle. Willing to do just about anything for another person.”
Before his murder, Andrew had just returned from visiting his mother a nearby nursing home.

California politicians promised "fast permits" for wildfire survivors looking to rebuild their homes.
Really?
New homes must have wiring for electric cars, a manual describing state solar energy incentives, and more.
No wonder so few have rebuilt.

Wildfires destroyed 13,000 homes in California. More than a year later only a “handful” have been rebuilt. The permit process is so daunting, most fire victims haven’t even applied for permits.

In September 1989, Boris Yeltsin stopped at a Randall’s supermarket during his US visit . The detour seemed trivial, but the ordinary grocery aisles would leave a deeper impression on him than NASA’s space center.
He saw abundance without privilege: shelves packed with everyday goods available to ordinary shoppers. Yeltsin reportedly said that not even Gorbachev could shop this way.
Is the abundance he witnessed still a reality today?
Measured in working time, the Thanksgiving dinner fell from 3.22 labor hours in 1986 to 1.76 in 2025, despite higher dollar prices.
Yet groceries did become more expensive after 2020. The pandemic constrained production and distribution while money supply expanded by roughly $6 trillion. More money met fewer available goods.
People often say the culprit is “greedflation.” But greed didn’t suddenly begin in 2020. With food-retail margins near 1.6 cents per sales dollar, generalized gouging is an incomplete explanation.
And if scarcity, not greed, is the core problem, suppressing prices cannot solve it. Price ceilings discourage supply and encourage overconsumption; government stores can conceal losses by shifting them to taxpayers.
Abundance ultimately requires price signals, competition, investment, and production.

The Declaration of Independence wasn't a request — it was a warning: your rights don't come from government, and government answers to you — not the other way around.
Six days before independence was declared, at a half-finished palmetto-log fort on Sullivan's Island, South Carolinians turned back the most powerful navy on Earth.
The palmetto on our flag is not for decoration. It is a record.
But 250 years on, we've drifted far from that founding. A federal government nearly $40 trillion in debt spends money nobody consented to. Surveillance programs treat citizens as suspects. A two-party duopoly writes the rules of its own competition, right down to the ballot access laws here in South Carolina.
The remedy isn't waiting on Washington to reform itself. It starts where 1776 did: with neighbors, communities, and free people acting through individual responsibility and voluntary cooperation.
On this 250th anniversary of American Independence, we reaffirm our commitment to self-ownership, free markets, free speech, privacy, the right to keep and bear arms — and to power returned to its rightful source: the individual.
Happy Independence Day, South Carolina.

H.3557 would require candidates from every political party in South Carolina, including parties that do not hold primaries, to pay a filing fee. For example, the filing fee to run for US Senate would be over $10,000.
This law reduces competition and shortens the filing period.
