October is #NationalSeafoodMonth!
For us at HSWRI, celebrating seafood means celebrating the science, people, and ocean resources behind the food we put on our plates.
Stay tuned for more from #SeafoodMonth from HSWRI! ππ¬π

The start of the school year means a new batch of #whiteseabass heading to our schools! We've recently started our #SeabassintheClassroom deliveries. Stay tuned for more updates throughout the semester! #aquaculture #STEMEducation
Join us this Saturday for Walter Munk Day!β¨
π 9:30 am - 4 pm at Kellogg Park by La Jolla Shores
Stop by our booth where HSWRI scientists will be on hand to educate and inspire you with the incredible marine science and conservation work happening at #HSWRI! See you there!
It's always a "Shell of a Time" on our team! Two weeks ago, Dr. Emily Kunselman attended the 80th Annual Pacific Shellfish Growers Association Meeting.

π¬π Happy #PostdocAppreciationWeek!
This week we're celebrating the postdoctoral researchers who help drive scientific discovery at #HSWRI! We're grateful for all of their knowledge, curiosity, and dedication!ππ

And they're off! ππ
Last week our team released 24,712 white seabass from our net pen in Agua Hedionda Lagoon! Released on an outgoing high tide, these fish have made their way out into the ocean!

With schools back in session, we're getting ready for our first #SeabassintheClassroom deliveries! ππ
Before the seabass can head to school, our veterinarian and hatchery team perform health checks to ensure transport of healthy fish! #aquaculture

This 4 year old white seabass was released from Southwestern Yacht Club in 2023 and caught by the Endeavor at Santa Rosa Island, an impressive 165+ nautical miles from it's original release site!

POV as an #intern at HSWRI: Step into the shoes of our summer @MiraCosta College Aquaculture interns! From raising #whiteseabass babies to helping with our scallop spawns, nothing says summer like surrounding yourself with marine life! #WorkforceDevelopment
Research. Education. Conservation. Aquaculture π
From raising fish in classrooms to studying marine animal behavior and developing more sustainable seafood systems, our teams are working toward a healthier ocean and more sustainable future.
Ever wonder what happens inside a marine fish hatchery and laboratory?

We recently hosted our 5th dolphin disentanglement
workshop. Thank you to @BluWrldResearch for leading and @dolphinsarasota, @MyFWC, @UFVetMed, @HarborBranch, @CMAquarium, and @AudubonNature for your participation and expertise! π¬
Check out this recent rescue of "Rony" an entangled dolphin near the Indian River Lagoon. We are grateful to the hard work of our #DolphinRescue team and partners including @NOAAFisheries, @SeaWorld, @MyFWC, @MoteMarineLab, @HarborBranch, @CMAquarium.
Thanks to everyone who attended our BBQ on the Bay last week! We were thrilled to share updates on our programs and facilities with friends, partners, donors, and supporters! Thanks to everyone who attended and all of you continuing to support our mission!
Back in March we introduced you to our green abalone broodstock! These abalone have been adjusting well and our dive team recently brought in a few additional individuals. Stay tuned for more exciting #abalone updates! #SustainableSeafood
Can you guess whose otoliths are whose? ππ
Fish don't have ears like us, they have otoliths. Otoliths help fish with balance and movement. Even when certain fish species are the same size, their otoliths can look remarkably different.
With students heading back to school, we're reflecting on all the wonderful student experiences we had this summer!
From interns, tours, career panels, and workshops, we had plenty of opportunities for hands-on science and exploring marine science!
Last week we showed you the process our team uses to sort juvenile #halibut by size. Shown here is how we move them into larger tanks. This "sluice" system utilizes flowing water and gravity to gently guide fish into new tanks. #SustainableSeafood π
Join the upcoming seminar with HSWRI's Dr. Ann Bowles! π¬ποΈ On Tuesday August 4, she'll be presenting "Aren't They Just Humans with Fins? Reflections on Five Decades Spent Researching #Odontocete Vocal Communication" and you won't want to miss!
