Coinbase x402 facilitator is down, here is what they don't want you to know: During the Coinbase outage many x402 sellers have been losing out on all the volume. Given that they have ~80% market share this essentially renders the majority of x402 powerless. 👇

Decentralization matters most in the quiet parts of the system.

If x402 feels powerful but also fragile, this is not accidental. At its core, x402 allows machines to pay for resources in the same way they request them. Payment becomes a native part of machine-to-machine interaction rather than an external coordination step. This is a fundamental shift. However, most current implementations still rely on a single facilitator to decide whether a payment is valid. As a result, autonomy quietly depends on one service being available, honest and neutral. This dependence creates a structural weakness. If the facilitator fails, censors transactions, or makes an error, the entire payment flow breaks, even when the underlying blockchain continues to function correctly. Hydra exists to remove this single point of trust. Instead of one intermediary, verification is performed by a network of independent nodes. These nodes check signatures, balances, and nonces in parallel. A payment is accepted only once a predefined threshold agrees. No single party decides. At the same time, verification remains off-chain and low-latency, while settlement still happens on-chain. If something goes wrong, economic guarantees back the outcome. Hydra is not about adding features. It is about making agent-to-agent payments reliable enough that autonomy does not quietly collapse at scale.

A lot of new agent infrastructure seems to be forming around @base lately 🤔 Not surprising, coordination-heavy protocols care more about predictability than raw throughput

Most “multi-chain” systems quietly multiply trust assumptions. Our System shows how Hydra avoids that entirely 👇

If a node misbehaves on any chain, slashing still occurs on Base. Security doesn’t fragment just because execution does.

Our System isn’t a diagram, it’s the constraint that makes decentralized x402 viable at scale. Thoughts?

Our testing of the nodes went perfectly, slay. The DNS is working, the nodes are talking, everything is clean. Big step forward toward our goal🚀

Design target for Hydra is L2-like latency with consensus-grade safety. Gateways query geographically distributed verifiers in parallel. Global verify and sign path sits around 180–250 ms median. Threshold signatures amortise trust across operators and unlock t-of-n safety. A single registry on Base coordinates stake and slashing across every chain. This is what makes x402 viable for real-time agent workloads.

Hydra is the decentralized facilitator layer behind x402. BFT threshold at t = ⌈(2n + 1) / 3⌉ so the system holds as long as fewer than a third go Byzantine. We run 5–7 verification nodes in parallel with a median latency around 180–250 ms. Settlement runs through gasless EIP-712 and EIP-3009 signatures with relayers handling the rest. Everything anchors to a single NodeRegistry on Base with unified slashing across chains. The goal is simple: make HTTP 402 payments feel as unstoppable as the L1s underneath them.

Alright, it’s time. The Hydra one-pager is live. Why x402 needs a decentralized facilitator layer, how it actually works, and what we are building next hydraprotocol.org/ProjectHyd…

The fee isn’t really the interesting part here. What still stands out for us is that x402 still relies on a single facilitator for all verification and settlement. That setup works at small scale, but once machine-to-machine payments start moving real volume, the real pressure point isn’t the price per transaction, it’s the fact that liveness, correctness and policy decisions all sit with one operator. Concentration becomes the actual bottleneck, not cost.
Coinbase x402 Facilitator will introduce a minimal fee starting Jan 1, 2026: → Free Tier: First 1,000 settled payments/month → Pricing: Just $0.001 per settled payment after that The low fee will ensure our ability to continue offering and improving this service. Details 🧵

Everyone’s hyped about AI agents paying each other with x402 but let’s zoom out little. There is a one big problem: – 1 facilitator – 1 API – Off-chain “trust me bro” verification And if that thing goes down as we saw with Coinbase two times the entire M2M payment layer stalls. Therefore Hydra exists so an AI economy doesn’t depend on a single company’s uptime.
