Huge thanks to @KeithCooper1973 and @theipaper for exposing the lack of meaningful, timely action by the @educationgovuk to protect disabled children in our schools from unnecessary harm. @bphillipsonMP

Is as true today as it was on 2022.
These offences carry a criminal penalty. However, the same acts perpetrated in education, treatment or medical environments are called behavioral management. Double standards? A crime is a crime regardless of setting. #AgainstRestraint

100% agree. If staff at Whitefield School had worn body cameras, and if staff at the Hesley Group’s Fullerton House, Wilsic Hall and Wheatley House settings, and many other schools where serious concerns have since emerged, had worn body cameras, the public might have seen what so many vulnerable disabled children experienced. They would have seen children locked alone in seclusion rooms. They would have seen small disabled children held on the floor by multiple adults. They would have seen restraints where children were heard saying they could not breathe. They would also have seen the physical injuries families have reported, including broken bones, knocked-out teeth, bruising and other serious harm. At Hesley, an independent national safeguarding review found evidence of systematic and sustained physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, sexual harm, misuse of medication, repeated dangerous physical restraint, inappropriate confinement, deprivation of liberty and a culture that concealed abuse from authorities. The review examined the experiences of 108 disabled children placed there by 55 local authorities. Let us also remember who is most affected. ICARS’ research found that the majority of reported incidents involved very young children, many under the age of eight. Transparency protects everyone. It protects good teachers from false allegations, and it protects children when abuse or misconduct occurs. But any body camera system must meet the same evidential standard as police body-worn video. Footage should be automatically uploaded, securely encrypted, time-stamped, independently retained and protected from editing, deletion, selective disclosure or being conveniently “lost.” Meeting that standard across every classroom in England would cost the government millions upon millions of pounds. It would require secure national infrastructure, vast data storage, strict retention rules, independent oversight, audit trails and legally robust evidence-handling procedures. Anything less would simply leave schools in control of another set of records that could be withheld, selectively disclosed or claimed to have been lost when a child or family challenges what happened. So yes, let’s have transparency. Let’s have evidence that protects good teachers and protects children equally. The truth should never depend on leaked footage or a whistleblower. It should be preserved, independently secured and available when justice demands it.
CCTV and bodycams for teachers in every classroom during all lessons. It’s the only solution we have IMHO. So everyone can see with their own eyes how much patience, support and professionalism 99.9% of teachers demonstrate and what they have to face on a daily basis. It’s much harder to distort and the presentation of every child as angelic and teachers as cruel monsters can finally be put to bed.

Due to the number of requests from families who were unable to meet the original 2 August deadline, the ICARS United Nations Evidence Survey on the use of restraint, seclusion, isolation, removal rooms, use of force, recording failures, detriment and disability discrimination in schools will remain open until 2 September 2026. If your child has experienced any of these practices in an English school, we encourage you to share your evidence. Every submission strengthens the evidence presented to the United Nations and helps ensure these experiences cannot be dismissed as isolated incidents. While England continues to expand these practices, US school districts have abandoned them, recognising the harm and discriminatory impact they have on children. Here is just one example taken from a New York Academy and their explanation of why it ended this authoritarian approach in 2020. teapawt.org/icarsbanrands/status/2…
We were asked whether we had a copy of Uncommon Schools’ 2020 letter confirming that SLANT was no longer being used, as it is no longer available online. We do. The images below show that letter. #AgainstRestraint

You tried to silence us. You tried to break us. You tried to change the story. But they cannot stop us from protecting children. We will not rest until every child is safe from institutional abuse. I’ve spent the last few days reflecting on what it means to finally see Provo Canyon School shut down for good. ❤️‍🩹 For so many years, this felt impossible. There were moments when people told us to give up, said nothing would ever change, or that our voices didn’t matter. But this is proof that when you refuse to stop fighting for what you believe in, anything is possible. To every survivor who bravely shared their story, thank you. Your courage changed history. To every advocate, family member, journalist, legislator, and supporter who stood beside us and believed us, thank you for helping make this moment possible. 🤍 This victory belongs to all of us. I hope this reminds anyone chasing what feels impossible that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. Never underestimate the power of your voice, your resilience, or what can happen when people come together for something bigger than themselves. 💫 While I’m taking a moment to celebrate this incredible milestone, our work isn’t over. We’ll keep fighting until every child is safe. ❤️ #BreakingCodeSilence #Survivor #ShutDownPCS #TTI #ISeeYouSurvivor

There Is No Place Like Understanding Dottie’s journey represents what too many children and families experience. For too many children across England, life-threatening restraint, seclusion, isolation, and the physical and psychological injuries that follow are real. Will your child’s voice be heard by the UN? Follow Dottie’s journey, then complete the ICARS United Nations Evidence Survey. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F… #AgainstRestraint #ThereIsNoPlaceLikeUnderstanding #PandemicOfPunishment

Sir Alan Wood’s review was published in December 2025. [-] six weeks later — the secretary of state wrote to the academy praising its achievements and encouraging it to become a systems leader for disadvantaged pupils. @bphillipsonMP Can you explain this shocking timeline?
Mossbourne refuses to apologise to pupils as academy trust defends record before councillors “Shouting is not the only way to remove a child’s dignity” said the MB chair in the meeting. So true. @educationgovuk where were you? hackneycitizen.co.uk/2026/07…

We welcome the Chief Social Worker’s thoughtful and thorough report into safeguarding in youth custody. She makes a series of significant recommendations, the impact of which we will review in detail over the coming days. We share the Chief Social Worker’s deep respect and gratitude to the survivors of Medomsley, whose strength and determination has brought us to this moment. Almost 40 years after Medomsley’s closure, there remain profound failures in the treatment of children in custody. This report tells us of children locked in prison cells for 20 hours a day, scant education, prolonged segregation, escalating violence, and an unsafe and frightening environment, but none of this is new. Indeed, the Chief Social Worker herself notes that “too much time and public money is spent repeating the same messages of systemic failure”. We agree and echo her urgent call on the government to “make change happen”. This cannot happen too soon. gov.uk/government/publicatio…

The Education Secretary has described the sickening revelations from a SEND local authority whistleblower on ITV as “completely unacceptable”. I have supplied her with similar evidence of widespread local authority misconduct, some possibly criminal, for over a year. 1/n

WOW. Just when we thought we were nearly done gathering evidence for the United Nations, the EEF releases its new “inclusive teaching” framework. Calling integration “inclusion” does not make it inclusion. We imagine many other advocates across England now have pages and pages of notes, just like we do! schoolsweek.co.uk/inclusive-…
