City planets covered with skyscrapers are common in science fiction, but where are the suburb planets? New Palo Alto: The First Suburb in Space. Where the whole surface has been subdivided for houses. What adventures does this place hold?

Excellent reporting by @ConorDougherty and @bencasselman on systemic underproduction of housing across the USA via @nytimes at nytimes.com/2022/07/23/bus… Chart below from @stlouisfed data shows long term decline in annual U.S. housing production relative to total households.

Life is too short to worry about stupid things. Have fun. Fall in love. Regret nothing, and don't let people bring you down. Study, think, create, and grow. Teach yourself and teach others. 🧠

Oregon's big parking-mandate rollback might allow loads of very low-cost housing, rapidly, if owners of parking lots could rent them for mobile, off-griddable housing, eg #tinyhouse. In PDX, plausibly 10,000s of homes, < $50k or $400/mo house + say $300 site rent. c/@Citizen_Cate

Oregon just approved the largest rollback to parking mandates in modern US history. What happens next? @Citizen_Cate & I have 5 answers: sightline.org/2022/07/22/ore…

Good morning! It's a big day in Oregon as our state land use board prepares to vote on the largest cut to parking mandates in modern US history. In state's 8 largest metros, mandatory auto parking would no longer be a meaningful barrier to homes & jobs. sightline.org/2022/05/21/ore…

My goal: Be like our LPs. Exposure to real estate without time commitments and work. They are already wealthy and decided to not give themselves a second job being a landlord. Arguably no better place to be.

As rents skyrocket, remember: a $100 increase in median rent is associated with a 9% increase in homelessness. Some states have laws in place to prevent price (rent) gouging after natural disasters - we should do the same nationally during a global pandemic.

Look, I'm just going to say it: At a certain point, our corrupt and moribund political culture has no hope of solving humanity's problems. You either bet on science and technology, or you bet on extinction.

Two recent charts that make me bullish on rental investing↓ 1) Huge affordability crisis 2) Shortage of 3.8 Million Homes across USA, worsened in 2019 = hard for most people to buy = increased demand for rentals.

Network State Book is out. I believe this is the 21st cent. book on digital City infrastructure comparable Corbusier's modernism. We might see paradigm shift from architects designing for client consensus to DAO/end user consensus. #decentralizedcity #networkstate #architecture

Conventional construction is unbelievably broken. The average conventionally built home has 24 different subcontractors involved. 🤯 @coverbuild is vertically integrated. ✅Designer ✅Engineer ✅Permit Expediter ✅Manufacturer ✅Every subcontractor ✅General Contractor – at Fremont, CA

Steve Jobs famously said innovation is "saying no to 1000 things" before you say yes. For more than a decade, Apple has used Pablo Picasso's Bull to drive home the lesson. Here's a breakdown 🧵

This is how the real Metaverse will happen. The web has evolved to be the most powerful computing platform in the world. It is not just the natural choice for enabling the Metaverse, it is guaranteed that it will become the de facto winner. Why?

It is weird to me that the people who want to treat this like an emergency are treated as radicals and the people who want to do nothing are treated as if they are moderate. Doing nothing about climate change is an absolutely radical, dangerous, deranged thing to do.
No relief in sight. Day after day in range 45-50C, even 10 days out. That's 113-122F. These are temperatures that kill. Pakistan and NW India are being hit hardest, but it is brutal throughout most of India. Although there is little reporting, the death toll must be staggering.

The environmental movement of the last generation was partly organized around stopping things. But to save the planet we are going to have to build things at an unprecedented speed and scale. We need to make it easier, not harder, to build big, planet saving projects.
