It's #WorldImmunizationWeek Vaccines have saved more than 150 million lives since 1974 — not by accident, but because ordinary people made the decision to protect themselves, their children and one another. That’s 6 lives every minute, every day, for more than 5 decades. #VaccinesWork Your decision makes a difference. Get vaccinated bit.ly/4mH2HWi

For older adults, being able to find and use online #health information isn’t just about convenience. it’s directly linked to better physical health, #mental well-being, and life satisfaction. A new study of over 8,300 Chinese adults aged 55+ found that higher electronic health #literacy (eHL) was strongly associated with better health-related quality of life. Positive attitudes toward #aging and greater self-efficacy played key roles in explaining these benefits, especially for #mentalhealth and life satisfaction, where the effects were fully mediated through these psychological pathways. jmir.org/2026/1/e84700

Shingles remains a significant but often overlooked health risk for older Canadians. In a recent Global News story, Reverend Dianne Parker of Nova Scotia shared her experience after developing shingles in her early 70s while undergoing radiation treatment for breast cancer. The overlapping illnesses made an already difficult time even more painful. “The pain was worse than childbirth,” she recalled. Her story underscores the importance of improving awareness and prevention. A report from the NIA estimates that about 130,000 shingles cases occur in Canada each year, costing the health care system $67–$82 million annually. Yet despite NACI recommendations that adults aged 50+ receive the shingles vaccine, fewer than four in ten Canadians have received even one dose. The NIA’s report, The Overlooked Issue of Shingles Infections in Older Canadians and How to Address It, calls for stronger awareness, improved vaccine access, and coordinated action to help protect older Canadians. 📺Watch the Global News story globalnews.ca/video/11705458… #HealthyAgeing #ShinglesAwareness #Vaccination #PublicHealth

💉 Toward Harmonized Adult Vaccination Schedules Across Canada Vaccine-preventable diseases, including influenza, continue to place significant pressure on our health systems. Older adults experience the greatest burden of severe illness and hospitalization. Vaccination is not only about preventing infection. It plays a critical role in preserving independence, reducing strain on healthcare systems and supporting healthier ageing across populations. The @IFAgeing Consensus Statement calls for better alignment of adult vaccination programs across jurisdictions, expanded access through modernized delivery systems and the meaningful inclusion of patient voices to strengthen public confidence. A more coordinated approach can help improve equitable access for older adults and other at-risk populations. The National Institute on Ageing was pleased to participate in the virtual Think Tank that informed the development of this national consensus statement. 🔎 Learn more: vaccines4life.com/wp-content…
