ARIA released today a new research from RedBridge Group which reveals the vast majority of Australians (78%) would keep the requirement for AI companies to get permission before using Australian creative work, even if some AI companies chose not to train their models in Australia. Just 9% would change the law.
The poll of 1,524 Australians shows the result holds across every demographic group polled, with no age, gender, income or education group below 65%. It also found that of the 33% who support AI companies training models in Australia, 82% say creators should decide whether their work is used and 71% would keep the permission requirement. ‼️
Other key findings include:
⚡️ The majority of Australians oppose changing copyright law to let AI companies use Australian creative work without permission.
⚡️Three in four Australians (74%) say Australian creators should have the right to decide whether their work is used to train and develop AI models. Only 12% say they should not.
⚡️Four in five Australians (78%) say an AI company claiming national security as a reason should still need permission to use Australian creative work. Only 9% say it should not.
⚡️52% would be more likely to support a political party that keeps the permission requirement, against 14% less likely.

Today a group of 63 international media organizations led by the News/Media Alliance delivered a letter to senior Australian politicians asking them to reject proposed changes to the country’s copyright laws that would allow artificial intelligence companies to use copyrighted material in training their models.
Collectively, the signatories represent thousands of copyright owners, creative sector organizations, and publishers across the world, and contribute to a growing domestic and international consensus, including comments from the Vatican, condemning the proposed changes.
They echo claims from Australia’s creative community that this would upend the country’s copyright regime by forcing rights holders to effectively forfeit their rights unless they opt-out. This undermines decades of international precedent, devalues their works and investments, and threatens their ability to negotiate for fair compensation for access to and use of their works.

To the AI doomsayers who worry about an impending invasion set on a collision course to gobble up the arts, there’s something almost comforting in Lucian Grainge‘s dismissiveness when presented with such a disaster scenario.
"Nothing really scares me. I’ve done this before several times already. This is just another transformation. We’re having this conversation because of the power of music. Seen it, done it, got the T-shirt. Nothing we can’t deal with if we fight to protect what human beings create." hollywoodreporter.com/music/…

@IFPI_org and the wider recorded music industry just launched a new initiative to tackle streaming fraud and protect artists, songwriters and fans.
BPI CEO Dr Jo Twist OBE:
“Streaming fraud is one of the key economic issues facing our industry, and the longer it goes unchecked, the harder it will be to eradicate fully from our music ecosystem. That’s why the Streaming Integrity Initiative, coming on the heels of the ‘End Streaming Fraud’ campaign, is vitally important and sees the global recorded music community uniting around key principles that will protect artists, songwriters, and fans from its harmful effects.
Rightsholders have stepped up, and we now need distributors, DSPs, and other stakeholders to match this commitment and support SII so that collectively we can put an end to streaming fraud.”
The Streaming Integrity Initiative (SII) sees a host of leading music companies uniting behind five key commitments to verify, vet, act, share and measure in the fight against fraudulent streaming.
Building on the IFPI's wider End Streaming Fraud campaign, the initiative aims to strengthen prevention, detection and enforcement across the music ecosystem.

It was a pleasure meeting Victoria Oakley, Chief Executive Officer of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.
I'm encouraged by the shared commitment to strengthening Kenya's creative economy and positioning Nairobi as Africa's next major hub for the recorded music industry.
I am particularly delighted that Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group have all agreed to establish a presence in Nairobi.
This is a significant vote of confidence in Kenya's creative talent, our policy direction, and the reforms underway to build a globally competitive music ecosystem.
The next phase is implementation, creating an environment where artistes, producers, publishers and investors can thrive together, generating jobs, exports and new opportunities for Kenyan creatives.
Kenya is open for music. Nairobi is ready.

Over 35 years after the Parental Advisory sticker, the record industry is now weighing whether to place labels on music that utilizes AI rollingstone.com/music/music…
The music industry is proposing two new AI labeling systems for songs:
• "AI-Generated" for tracks created largely or entirely with AI
• "AI-Assisted" for songs where AI helped with some creative elements
• The labels do not currently apply to AI’s use for lyrics, compositions, music videos or a song’s cover art
