Doctors + engineers = healthcare’s next big breakthrough?
@iitmadras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti told @ThePrintIndia @RichhariyaSneha about the big plan: a School of Medical Sciences and an on-campus hospital, where medicine and engineering share one roof.
What’s coming:
🧬 Digital twins and mathematical models of the human body
⌚ Medical devices and wearables built for Indian needs
🤖 AI decision support for areas short on specialists
🎗️ An experimental breast cancer vaccine using Indian patient data
🚀 A bio-incubator for vaccine, agri-tech and traditional medicine startups
Can they pull it off? 500+ incubated startups and the indigenous Shakti microprocessor say yes. Now that same engine is aimed at healthcare, with one goal: affordable, scalable research made for India.
The future belongs to people who speak both languages: clinical and technical.

In an exclusive coverage by Ms Radifah Kabir, India Today, IIT Madras Professor Arvind Pattamatta, Department of Mechanical Engineering, explains why heat is a critical concern for electric vehicle (EV) batteries and how research is addressing it.
Charging a battery immediately after a ride can add to the heat it has already generated, accelerating ageing and potentially compromising safety.
At the Multiscale Thermal Transport Research Laboratory, Professor Pattamatta and his team are exploring innovative cooling approaches, including infrared imaging to detect hotspots, T-shaped liquid-cooled cold plates, Peltier cooling and immersion cooling using specialised dielectric fluids.
The research aims to advance effective thermal management solutions, particularly for EV batteries operating in India's hot climatic conditions.
Meanwhile, allowing batteries to cool before charging, parking in the shade and avoiding frequent full charges can help extend battery life.

Road safety is a challenge that calls for innovation, collaboration and fresh thinking.
This was the central thought behind a fireside chat with Hon’ble Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India, and Chairman, Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety (SCCoRS), and Shri Sanjay Bandopadhyay, IAS (Retd.), Member, SCCoRS.
Bringing together students, practitioners and innovators, the session explored India's road safety challenges and the role of technology in addressing them.
Justice Sapre highlighted key causes of road crashes, including overspeeding, drunk driving, wrong-side driving, jumping red lights, mobile phone use while driving, unsafe overtaking and driver fatigue and stressed the importance of applying first-principles thinking to develop effective solutions.
The discussion also explored how geospatial data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can enable advanced road safety interventions.
The session introduced the Road Safety Innovation Hub, developed by the Government of Tamil Nadu with RBG Labs, as a platform for students, researchers and entrepreneurs to share, test and advance their ideas.
Many of the answers to India’s road safety challenges may well come from rooms like this one. If you’re working on an idea in this space, or have been thinking about one, we’d love to hear from you.

#TechTuesday Beyond Financial Loss: Understanding the Human Impact of Cybercrime
As India embraces digital payments and online banking, financial cybercrime is becoming an increasingly pressing concern. But the impact of these crimes goes far beyond money lost – victims often endure psychological distress, fear and a lack of institutional support.
A study by researchers from @iitmadras and @LIBA_Chennai, examines financial cybercrime from the victims’ perspective, drawing insights from interviews with 33 victims across five Indian cities.
The research, conducted by Prof. Kandaswamy Paramasivan, IIT Madras and SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Prof. Nandan Sudarsanam, IIT Madras, Dr Akanksha Jaiswal and Dr Ameeta Fernando, LIBA, explores how fear, urgency and coercion shape victims’ experiences, highlighting that even digitally knowledgeable individuals are not immune to fraud.
The findings underline the need for stronger public awareness, coordinated institutional responses and accessible financial and psychological support for victims.
