What if the future of cargo transportation could fly just above the water? As reported in Moneycontrol, IIT Madras-incubated startup Waterfly Technologies is preparing to conduct the first ocean trial of its electric-powered flying boat, Hummingbird, between Chennai and Puducherry by December 2026. Designed to skim close to the water’s surface, Hummingbird uses the aerodynamic principle of ground effect to reduce drag and improve efficiency. The 300-kg craft has progressed from an earlier 30-kg prototype to a larger design, with potential applications in coastal and island cargo transport, including offshore oil field logistics. With an estimated range of around 1,000 km on a single charge, the startup aims to make cargo transportation more cost-effective, targeting costs below Rs 10 per tonne-kilometre. From innovative prototypes to real-world ocean trials, this is another glimpse into how the IIT Madras startup ecosystem is advancing homegrown deeptech solutions for the future of transportation. What does it take to build a city where everyone can move with safety, independence and dignity? On White Cane Day, observed on 15th October 2026, IIT Madras Professor Dr Hemachandran Karah explores this question in his op-ed, “The Unprepared Ground for White Cane Users,” published in The Hindu. Drawing on experiences in Chennai and London, he highlights the everyday barriers faced by people with visual impairments, from obstructed pavements and open drains to traffic noise and inaccessible infrastructure. His message is clear: accessibility must go beyond mobility aids. Instead of asking people to adapt to unsafe environments, we must build cities that adapt to everyone’s needs. This White Cane Day, let’s rethink our public spaces and work towards cities where inclusion is not an exception, but a way of life. 🔗 Read the op-ed: thehindu.com/opinion/op-ed/t… @iitmadras @the_hindu

Can genetic data from Indian cancer patients help researchers develop a vaccine tailored to their tumours? At IIT Madras, a decade of cancer tissue collection and genomic research has laid the groundwork for an experimental mRNA breast cancer vaccine. (1/4) The National Cancer Tissue Biobank, set up at IIT Madras in 2015, was established to address the shortage of Indian cancer samples for research. It has since collected around 10,000 tissue samples from more than 12 hospitals, giving researchers material to study the genetic changes associated with cancer. (2/4) The team has identified tumour antigens reported to be unique to Indian patients, along with other potential targets. The vaccine is designed to use mRNA to help the body recognise these targets and mount an immune response against cancer cells. (3/4) Researchers are completing the vaccine construct and preparing to test it in a mouse model of breast cancer. What's inside IIT Madras' decade-long effort to develop a breast cancer vaccine tailored to Indian patients? (4/4) Read the full story by @RichhariyaSneha theprint.in/health/the-searc…

IIT Madras Develops the World’s First Human Ischemic Stroke Atlas During the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s visit to IIT Madras, Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre (SGBC) released C-STROKE, the world’s first human ischemic stroke atlas as an open global resource. This pioneering resource bridges clinical MRI scans with microscopic, whole-brain imaging, offering insights into stroke-related changes at the cellular level. Featuring over 1,000 annotated brain sections, the atlas maps key cellular markers associated with neuronal health, neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier disruption, hypoxia and axonal injury. Developed with support from IIT Madras Distinguished Alumnus Mr V. Prem Watsa, the atlas provides an open-access platform for researchers and clinicians worldwide to investigate cerebrovascular diseases and explore potential therapeutic targets. #TechTuesday Can a network’s attempt to recover from delays actually make things worse? Researchers at IIT Madras, Professor Krishna M. Sivalingam and PhD Scholar Sooraj Subramanian M. S., are exploring how repeated connection attempts can increase the workload inside 5G networks, leading to further delays. The researchers studied this phenomenon using Hawkes processes, mathematical models that explain how one event can trigger more events, much like earthquake aftershocks. The team developed a method called protocol-causal transaction reconstruction to trace connection attempts and identify how unfinished requests lead to additional work within the 5G Core. Experiments across three open-source 5G Core implementations—Open5GS, OAI 5G CN and free5GC—revealed that limiting incoming requests may not be enough to control internal network activity, as retries can amplify the workload. The research also explores practical monitoring signals to help identify this hidden strain and better understand 5G network performance. 🔗 Read more: tech-talk.iitm.ac.in/when-tr… 📄 Read the study: ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract… @iitmadras #IITMadras #5G #Telecommunications #NetworkResearch #ResearchAtIITM
