IMPD homicide detectives, with the assistance of IMPD’s Violent Crimes Unit (VCU), K9, and North District officers, arrested a 15-year-old male for his alleged involvement in an early June shooting and robbery that left a man dead.
On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, just after 1 a.m., IMPD East District officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of N Mitthoefer Road on a report of a person shot. When officers arrived, they located an adult male with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) transported the male to an area hospital in critical condition, where he later died. Homicide detectives responded to the scene to begin the investigation.
Through the course of the investigation, a 15-year-old male suspect was identified. Detectives presented their findings to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO), and a murder and robbery with serious bodily injury warrant was issued for the 15-year-old's arrest. On October 5, 2026, VCU detectives, along with K9 and North District officers, located and arrested him without issue in the 3500 block of E 38th Street.
As with any person arrested, the suspect is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

More guns, drugs, and criminals are off the streets of Central Indiana thanks to the diligent efforts of the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force (ICGTF). The task force has made significant strides in reducing crime and preventing gun violence, making our city safer for all.
So far this year, ICGTF operations have resulted in:
•14 machine gun conversion devices
•127 arrests
•143 firearms seized
•Over 2,600 grams of Fentanyl
•Over 8,000 grams of Cocaine
•Nearly 140lbs of total drugs seized
The ICGTF is a partnership of law enforcement officers and analysts from several central Indiana law enforcement agencies in Marion, Boone, Hamilton, Hendricks, Lake, and Allen counties. While today’s arrest is significant, my heart breaks for everyone impacted by this tragedy. A young man lost his life, and another now faces allegations that will change his life forever.

IMPD homicide detectives have arrested a juvenile for his alleged role in the May 28th murder of 23-year-old Brett Scrogham.
On Thursday, May 28th, 2026, IMPD officers were near a parking garage in the 100 block of S. Capitol Avenue when they were notified of a possible gunshot being fired inside the garage. Several officers entered the parking garage and located a victim, later identified as Mr. Scrogham, in a vehicle with a gunshot wound(s). He was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
IMPD homicide detectives responded to begin their investigation. After reviewing available video footage, evidence, and speaking to witnesses, detectives identified a juvenile male as the suspect in this case. The IMPD Violent Crimes Unit was tasked with locating him, and on Wednesday, June 3rd, the suspect was taken into custody on Indy’s west side.
“While today’s arrest is significant, my heart breaks for everyone impacted by this tragedy. A young man lost his life, and another now faces allegations that will change his life forever,” said Chief Tanya Terry.
“This arrest is the result of countless hours of dedicated work by our IMPD detectives, officers, and US Marshalls. While today's announcement marks an important step forward in this investigation, it cannot heal or ease the pain felt by Mr. Scrogham’s family, friends, and loved ones. This case is a tragic reminder that a single act of violence can alter countless lives in an instant,” Chief added.
Detectives are working with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, which will make the final charging decisions. The suspect should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

As many kids have more free time, IMPD has launched our “Stay Aware, Show You Care” campaign with tips to help parents and guardians stay connected and informed.

☀️ Talk with your kids about curfew, and decide how often they should check in
☀️Utilize location-sharing apps to our child. If you are using a location-tracking app, be honest about it. Explain that it’s a tool for safety, not a lack of trust
☀️Know where your kids are and who they’re with
☀️Establish rules about parties, gatherings, and sleepovers
☀️Set expectations for social media and phone use
☀️Make sure your child always has a safe ride home plan
☀️Know the parents of your child’s friends whenever possible. Having their contact information in your phone is essential for emergencies or quick plan changes.
☀️Keep communication open. Kids are more likely to follow rules when they feel heard.
Starting these conversations early builds trust and sets the tone for a safe and fun summer ahead!
