.@sjainind, Secretary General, IPA, on @CNBCTV18Live: the 30% trade margin cap on 137 anti-cancer medicines, effective 9 Nov, is expected to lower prices on 1,000+ brands at the point of purchase. The cap applies to the distribution chain, not to manufacturers. India supplies some of the lowest-cost medicines in the world; a holistic view of access, supply and investment keeps it that way. #IndianPharma @Pharmadept

The New York Times went inside India’s pharmaceutical industry to understand why the world’s largest medicine market still depends on it for generics. The answer runs deeper than cost. Five things the piece makes clear: The scale is hard to replace Generics fill 90% of US prescriptions. 40% of those generics are made in India. Few industries anywhere carry that share of another country’s daily medicine supply. The capability was built over fifty years India entered generics in the 1970s. By the time its patent law aligned with WTO standards in 2005, its manufacturers were already supplying Asia, Africa and Latin America. @sjainind , Secretary General, Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, to the NYT: “In the U.S., once it goes out of patent, you forget about it. But in India, the entrepreneurs keep on working and developing it, and at these volumes, you get better at making it.” The quality bar has moved with the volumes US FDA inspections of Indian plants are now unannounced, and the industry’s large manufacturers are clearing them. The standard India’s generics are built to today is the one the world’s most demanding regulator applies. The pipeline is widening Over the next five to seven years, 55 major patents worth about USD 300 billion a year will expire in the US. Each one is a medicine Indian manufacturers can make more affordable. The future is interdependent Medicine supply chains do not split neatly by country. Much of the world’s active ingredient supply, India’s included, comes from a single source. Mr Jain told the NYT this creates an opportunity for India and the US to build their pharmaceutical capabilities together rather than pull them apart. A spurious drug is not a brand problem. It is a patient safety problem. Session 6 of the 11th Advanced GMP Workshop opened Day 2 with anti-counterfeit and supply chain integrity. Ranga Chandrasekhar, Joint Drugs Controller (India), CDSCO, set out what government, regulators and industry each bring to the fight against spurious medicines: stronger penalties, the phased rollout of QR codes and track-and-trace, and the gaps that remain between the manufacturer and the retail shelf. Dr. Keshav Kumar, Senior Advisor, IPA, brought a law enforcement lens: counterfeiting is organised crime, and investigation has to follow the money and the network, not just the seized product. The message from both: eradicating spurious drugs needs every link in the chain working on the same system, and every stakeholder treating it as their problem. Day 2 is live now. World Heart Day is a reminder that progress in cardiovascular care is measured in one place: patient outcomes. Managing heart disease depends on medicines taken consistently, often for life. That makes two things essential. Quality, so that every dose performs as intended. And access, so that treatment remains within reach of the patient. Indian pharmaceutical companies contribute to both, supplying quality-assured affordable medicines to patients in more than 200 countries. IPA remains committed to advancing quality and access, and to strengthening the research and manufacturing capabilities that will bring the next generation of cardiovascular medicines. #WorldHeartDay #IndianPharma #QualityAndAccess
