Great to speak to Naga & Charlie on BBC Breakfast this morning about @MartinSLewis’s new Small Ideas Initiative. Small ideas can make big improvements to our lives, show government at all levels listens & build trust that politics can deliver. Fab idea!
NEWS: Today I’m launching The Small Ideas Initiative. We want you to submit ideas at Small-Ideas.org for non-controversial fixes, e.g “live sewage updates for beaches” or “standardised allergen menus”. A year ago, an interviewer asked what I’d have told the Government if I’d been advising it, I replied, 'Come up with 100 small things that piss people off and fix one a day for the first 100 days'. As I left the stage, I emailed myself, 'set up Small ideas institute!' And today, I’m excited it's happening. I’m funding two charities to work together to collate the submissions, narrow them down to about 200 doables then turn those into formal policy proposals which I'll bring back to you for feedback. Then to finish we've a Cross-Party panel who’ve agreed to pick 50ish, after which we’ll start trying to make them happen. You can read far more about it and who the cross party panel are here… blog.moneysavingexpert.com/2…

Always dangerous to be so relaxed whilst speaking to a journalist.. Great to speak with @bbcnickrobinson for @BBCr4today on how the PM’s clarity of focus helps delivery across Whitehall.

Why are the Right trying to stop people from joining the army? 🇬🇧🪖 Soldiers, sailors and airmen are disproportionately white, working-class men. But are they now turning against the military? Who is behind it? Why is it gaining traction? And what can be done about it? 🧵👇

Really timely @IPPRNorth panel on the need to invest in communities, get to grips with what devolution means for local people, and make sure engagement is genuinely place-based and strategic.

Great to speak to @iainjwatson for @BBCNews this morning on what to expect from Burnham at #LPC26. Cost of living should remain centre stage. Budget only four weeks away & will need to be bold. Hope & change!

🏙️ | NEW REPORT: We expect Mayors to deliver growth, but fail to give them the tools to let them. Our new research finds that giving Mayors a 5 per cent share of income tax, would roughly double their local spending power. Here's our plan for fiscal devolution 👇️ ippr.org/articles/devolution…

If were serious about making the tax system fairer, equalising capital gains tax with income tax is a practical place to start. Someone who works everyday to make a living should not pay a higher percentage of their income in tax, then someone making money from selling an asset or an investment. @RachaelAHenry on GBnews.

Reform are correct in their identification of not enough social housing, but their solution is the wrong one. Social housing is already prioritised for those who need it most - people who are homeless or fleeing domestic violence, families with young children, people living in overcrowded homes. Priority is also given to current or former members of the armed forces and some councils give extra priority to people who are in work or volunteering. Instead of needlessly setting the 1.3 million people on the social housing waiting list against each other, Reform should be laying out exactly how they are going to deliver a boost in social housing numbers. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvgj…

As a former Treasury official I’ve seen the lasting grip of austerity in the department since 2010 & false hope that cuts have no consequence. To regionally reboot our economy it’s quite right that the PM wants to focus on growth & opportunity out of Whitehall & from No10 North.
Exclusive from @patrickkmaguire Andy Burnham has said that No 10 North will take over responsibility for economic growth from the Treasury as part of a “huge transfer of power” out of Whitehall In an interview with The Times, the prime minister raised concerns about the Treasury’s traditional “dual role” in both promoting economic growth and controlling the public finances He said the department’s focus on balancing the books “sometimes clouds that growth mission” and that the significance of No 10 North, which is based in Manchester, would become “more and more apparent as we go forward” The prime minister said John Healey, the chancellor, was fully supportive of the approach, while he hit out at critics who have derided No 10 North as a “satellite office” Comparing No 10 North to the Department of Economic Affairs, Harold Wilson’s doomed attempt to establish a dedicated growth ministry, Burnham said: “I just wish people might just engage with the seriousness of the proposition.” “It is actually a huge transfer of power,” Burnham said. “It’s something that the country has never cracked before. I don’t wish this to sound, you know, a criticism or negative about the Treasury. “There’s a job to be done around control of public finances. It’s just the dual job of growth and control of public finances [that] sometimes clouds the growth mission. And particularly having No 10 leading on that growth mission means you’ve got maximum power to unlock the blockages where they exist in the wider Whitehall system.” thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…
