Donald Trump was done on January 6. Republican lawmakers failed to overturn the 2020 election after the violence was quelled. Mike Pence did his job, confirming Joe Biden’s victory. Social-media companies locked Trump out, and even allies issued rebukes. Two weeks later, the 45th president jetted off in disgrace for would-be exile in Mar-a-Lago. Democracy held. Next, 67 senators could’ve voted to convict Trump in impeachment proceedings, barring him from running for office; state and federal prosecutors could’ve put the former president on trial for conspiracy and election subversion. However, two men, Mitch McConnell and John Roberts, helped ensure that such accountability would never come to pass, paving the way for Trump’s return to power. The former Senate majority leader and chief justice of the Supreme Court each deservedly get a chapter in ‘Profiles in Cowardice,’ veteran political writer Jacob Weisberg’s searing “study in collaboration in the Trump era.” Read Michael Calderone on the people who enabled Trump’s return to power: nymag.visitlink.me/PcVt51

🚨The Trump Justice Department has refused to release witness interview transcripts from the investigation of former North Dakota Republican Sen. Ray Holmberg, more than a year after he was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for traveling to Prague to s*xually abuse children. The Forum requested the records under FOIA. The Criminal Division answered that disclosure would be an “unwarranted invasion of personal privacy” and that the files lacked an “overriding public interest.” Holmberg served 45 years in the state Senate. He resigned in 2022 after reporting tied him to a jailed defendant who shared child s*xual abuse material. He later pleaded guilty to traveling abroad between 2011 and 2016 for illicit s*xual contact with minors. Judge Daniel Hovland imposed the statutory maximum in March 2025. Holmberg is now at the Federal Medical Center in Rochester, with a projected release date in 2033. Federal agents interviewed Holmberg’s close associates, including the late Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem. Stenehjem deleted voicemails Holmberg left before and after that interview. One message, later described by the current attorney general, said: “Wayne, this is my burner phone. I’m in big trouble. Don’t tell anyone.” A state BCI report also described Holmberg emailing UND entrepreneur Bruce Gjovig about a “twink” and adding, “No one is ever too young… remember Prague.” Gjovig has denied knowledge of the crimes. Fargo businessman Jim Poolman confirmed a brief Homeland Security interview and likewise denied involvement. A convicted 45-year lawmaker, a burner-phone plea to the state’s top prosecutor, and a paper trail that mentions Prague are not private family matters. They are a record of how power, friendship, and silence operated in one of the longest Republican careers in North Dakota history. Withholding the interviews after a guilty plea and a maximum sentence does not protect children. It protects the remaining questions about who knew what, and when. #ReleaseTheHolmbergFiles

Lieu: Democrats were right about Russian influence in America. We know that Trump’s first campaign manager colluded with the Russians. The DOJ did a report saying that Russia systematically influenced our elections. Now, we have more evidence that you have a Russian oligarch paying money to a member of the Trump family. We need an explanation from the president and his son.

BREAKING: A whistleblower came to my office alleging the Trump Administration is directing federal officers to break state law in its hunt for “evidence” for Trump’s baseless voter fraud claims, including lying to access sensitive voter information and fabricating law enforcement records against U.S. citizens. This is happening weeks before the midterms. DHS must shut it down. NOW.

Garcia: So, to be clear, we have a president that is $2 billion richer just from this last year. We have a son whose wedding is being paid for by rich Russians and oligarchs that have connections to Putin. We have Jared Kushner, who got $2 billion for his investment firm from the Saudis while also doing diplomacy in the Middle East. We have the Kushners who are trying to buy private islands and selling all sorts of merchandise that’s being promoted, oftentimes through government resources. We also have, of course, this insane amount of stock trading that the president himself is doing to enrich himself and his family. And, of course, the sons sitting on boards of private companies that are then getting contracts from the federal government. The amount of corruption is unprecedented. And not only are they lining their pockets, they’re stealing the wealth of hardworking Americans, they’re stealing the hard-earned labor and wealth of working-class people, and then funneling that money to themselves and to the rich donors and large corporations and CEOs across this country. As they get richer, costs go up for the American people. And we know that Republicans in the House and in the Senate are complicit by not calling out this corruption.

Don Jr’s Bahamas wedding was secretly bankrolled by a Russian oligarch tied to Putin. This is unprecedented corruption that’s also a major national security risk. I don’t want to hear another frickin word about Hunter Biden ever again.

What a joke. This guy is bankrolled by Big Pharma, he voted 19 times against lowering drug prices.
Pharmaceutical companies are ripping us off. In the Senate, I’ll take on big Pharma, insurers, and hospital monopolies to put Michiganders first.

🚨A twice-convicted, lifetime-registered s*x offender was invited to give the opening prayer at a Michael Whatley campaign rally. According to AP reporting, pastor Daimon L. King, 60, delivered the opening prayer at an Aug. 28 event at Craven County GOP headquarters featuring North Carolina Senate candidate Whatley and Trump health official Dr. Mehmet Oz. King leads New Beginnings Celebration church in New Bern and has served as a Craven County GOP precinct chairman. His record: Wake County court files show King pleaded guilty in 1998 to statutory r*pe/s*xual offense and indecent liberties with a child — a 15-year-old student — while working as a high school marching band assistant. He served nearly five years and was paroled in 2003. In 2010, he pleaded guilty to three felony counts of inc*st involving an underage female relative, serving nearly three more years. NC’s sex offender registry lists him as a “recidivist” with a lifetime registration requirement, still registered through the Craven County Sheriff’s Office. Whatley’s campaign told AP he didn’t know King and didn’t organize the event; spokesman DJ Griffin said the county GOP invited the guests. Neither King nor county party officials responded to AP. This isn’t Whatley’s first brush with this exact issue — he’s also faced scrutiny over ties to Harvey L. West Jr., a former state GOP official convicted of five counts of indecent liberties with a child. West told AP he’d warned others about King: “I just said, ‘Hey, y’all might want to take a look at this.’” Nobody listened.
