ALT Research Spotlight graphic titled “Why This Matters.” It states that COVID-19, workforce shortages, and aging populations have intensified instability in healthcare, affecting nurses, patient care, and organizations. Four contributing factors are listed: workforce shortages, staffing inconsistencies, fluctuating workloads, and workplace violence. The review examined 15 studies from 2014–2026 in CINAHL, PsycINFO and PubMed, focusing on hospital and inpatient settings.

ALT Research Spotlight graphic titled “Key Findings.” The review identifies three major impacts of workplace instability in healthcare: emotional and physical toll, including burnout, moral distress, compassion fatigue and intent to leave; patient safety risks, including medication errors, falls, infections and higher mortality; and organizational costs, including high turnover, increased agency staffing and reduced team cohesion.

ALT Research Spotlight graphic titled “The Bottom Line.” Workplace instability in healthcare threatens nurse well-being, patient safety and healthcare sustainability, highlighting the need for systemic solutions. The graphic identifies Ryan Page, MSN, RN, and Gregory Carter, PhD, RN, and includes a citation for their 2026 integrative review.
