These findings do not tell us anything directly about the characteristics and experiences of people with a neurodevelopmental diagnosis.
Strikingly, all questionnaires loaded strongly onto one factor suggesting that these broader phenotype measures capture shared variance in “neurodiversity” more than they measured characteristics and experiences distinctly associated with any one condition.
We gave a demographically representative sample of 1000 British adults widely-used questionnaires about characteristics and experiences associated with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, DCD, Tourette’s syndrome, cortical hyperexcitability, and sensory sensitivity.
What do questionnaires about the broader phenotypes for neurodevelopmental conditions actually measure?
Trying to think about neurodiversity transdiagnostically leads to some interesting questions about things we might have thought we knew.

Understanding exceptional human social abilities may require us instead to understand how people avoid the apparent requirements for high levels of recursion.
