It is only fair if the laws start applying to those who come into the UK after the law takes effect. Apart from the uncertainty and vulnerability, the cost of renewing visa again is a lot. If you're a family of 5, you're looking at about ยฃ18k.
You'll have to keep renewing till you clock 10 years. How do you want to save?
๐ฌ๐ง THE NEW UK ILR PROPOSAL: WHY IMMIGRANTS ARE PANICKING. ๐งต
There is serious tension among immigrants in the UK right now, and you cannot blame them.
The government is expected to provide further updates on its proposed changes to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
For some immigrants, this is not just about immigration policy. It is about their jobs, families, finances and future.
Let me explain why people are worried.
Many Skilled Workers came to the UK with the understanding that, after five qualifying years, they could apply for ILR if they met the requirements.
Now, the government wants to make 10 years the standard qualifying period.
Imagine planning your life around five years, only to hear that you might need another five.
Some people have spent four years and several months in this country.
They have worked, paid taxes, contributed to the NHS, raised children and even bought houses.
Some are already preparing their ILR applications.
Now imagine telling these people that the goalpost might be moved just when they are about to cross the finish line.
How is that fair?
And before someone comes here to say, โIt is their country, they can do whatever they want.โ
Of course, they can make their immigration laws.
But there is something called fairness, and there is something called legitimate expectation.
People made life-changing decisions based on the rules they were given.
Changing those expectations halfway through the journey raises serious questions.
Do you even understand what another five years on a visa could mean?
More visa-related expenses. More uncertainty about employment. More years of depending on sponsorship.
For some families, it could mean thousands of pounds in additional costs.
And for workers whose immigration status depends on their employers, it means more years of vulnerability.
Now, letโs talk about the NHS and care sector.
The UK actively recruited healthcare professionals from overseas because it needed them.
These workers left their countries, their families and sometimes well-established careers to come here.
Many have spent years working nights, weekends and bank holidays to keep essential services running.
Should they now face a longer route to settlement?
Another reason people are panicking is the uncertainty.
Will the changes affect only new arrivals?
Will people already approaching five years be protected?
What happens to dependants?
Will healthcare workers receive exemptions?
These are questions affecting real families, yet many people still do not have clear answers.
There is also a psychological side to this conversation.
Imagine living in a country for years but still feeling that your future depends on the next political announcement.
You cannot plan confidently because you donโt know what the rules will look like tomorrow.
That uncertainty alone is enough to make people anxious.
I support the right of the UK government to control immigration.
But immigration control should not become an excuse to treat people who followed the rules unfairly.
If you want to introduce a new settlement system, why not apply it prospectively and provide reasonable transitional protections?
Why should someone who arrived under one set of expectations suddenly face a completely different journey?
As we await todayโs update, I hope the government understands that immigrants are not just statistics on a spreadsheet.
They are human beings with families, mortgages, children in schools and years of investment in this country.
Nobody is asking for automatic citizenship or settlement.
People are asking for fairness, clarity and reasonable protection for those already here.
Should the proposed 10-year ILR rule affect immigrants who are already in the UK? ๐ฌ๐ง
