After my abuse, the most helpful people were those who said, “You can tell me as much or as little as you want.” They didn’t silence me for their own comfort nor did they pry for juicy gossip. I got to choose. These people let my suffering be about me and not themselves.

My thoughts on the recent columns (Friday Roundup and the "opinion" post) by @markwingdallas regarding the @netgrace_org investigation related to David Pooler: Journalists are absolutely right to ask hard questions. That’s not the issue for me here. The problem is asking those questions while either knowingly (or sloppily) omitting critical context. For decades, virtually every major news organization has declined to identify alleged victims of sexual assault or harassment without their consent. The Society of Professional Journalists likewise urges heightened sensitivity when reporting on victims of sexual misconduct. So why portray a report’s decision to protect victims’ identities as though it’s somehow improper or evidence of a lack of credibility? Also, the GRACE report was not authored by an anonymous source making anonymous accusations. It was commissioned by a named organization and prepared by a named independent investigative organization. Protecting victims’ identities is not the same as shielding anonymous accusers. If there were genuine concerns about the report’s methodology, why didn't Mark simply reach out to GRACE or the commissioning organization directly before writing? For example, Mark writes, "According to GRACE’s website, anonymity is the default position for its investigations. Why?" Perhaps Mark should have attempted to answer that question by actually reaching out to GRACE. Finally, there is an important distinction between reporting the news and advocating a personal viewpoint. When a reporter covers a story and then quickly publishes opinion pieces criticizing or defending it, the line between objective reporting and commentary can blur. At a minimum, it creates the appearance of a conflict. Credibility depends not only on fairness but also on the appearance of fairness. If Mark had approached this as a journalist rather than an opinion writer, he likely would have found answers to many of the questions he raised.

When abuse is disclosed, pay attention to the institution's response: church or "unity" centered = $, reputation, & brand centered victim centered = Christ centered It's really not that hard. #SBCtoo

Some important insights from @ChristaBrown777 @bozlawpa @InHisGrip in this article I reported
Some have praised new @WatchOnWonder drama 'It's Not Like That' as “refreshing.” But abuse survivors and experts warn its pastor-congregant romance ignores the power imbalance between clergy and members—relationships criminalized in multiple states. julieroys.com/new-christian-…

Pastors, You know why Jesus was able to talk to women alone? He wasn’t a pervert. Be like Jesus.

If you talk about how much better your church is over someone else's, you've missed the point. #SBCtoo

Why is it that whenever one speaks against unspecified abusers, misogynists, or predators, that most people start defending their pastor/idol? 🤔 #SBCtoo

I'm the type of Christian who chooses to LOVE others. The church I left taught judgment & hate toward anyone outside its theology/cover-ups. It took my pastor SA me to realize Christ wasn't in their midst at all. What I hate now is how long I hurt others in my ignorance.

It’s a tragic thing when the church's name is guarded and glorified more fiercely than Christ’s. #SBCtoo #Churchtoo

When congregants choose their church over its victims, it reveals the institution fails to teach the Gospel. #SBCtoo #Churchtoo

What many churches fail to understand, when it comes to bringing people to Christ, is that love is much more effective than hate. I've never met someone–who loved well–and thought, "I don't want to be like them," but I have thought that about many "Christians" who hated well.

Protecting victims often comes at a cost, which is why many churches choose to protect themselves instead. But I guarantee there is no greater cost than what the victim has already paid–will continue to pay for the rest of his/her life. #SBCtoo #Churchtoo #AdultClergySexualAbuse

I participated on a conference panel discussing abuse in the church a couple weeks ago at Baylor University. We need more public talks on this. Awareness is growing but we have a long way to go. thebhhs.org/panel-urges-bapt…

Narcissists will always play the victim! I'm grateful for this Federal Judge who saw through JH's DARVO and frivolous claims.
A federal judge dismissed fmr SBC pres Johnny Hunt’s defamation claims against Guidepost Solutions & most of his case against the @SBCExecComm. He sued after a report alleged he sexually assaulted a woman, an incident he denied but then called consensual. julieroys.com/judge-rules-ag…

Early Jan, Johnny Hunt's lawsuit, suing for $100m+, got pushed to June–ongoing since the Guidepost Rpt in 22. Meanwhile, his victims live w/him still in spotlight while they scrounge to pay for therapy for trauma he caused them. SBC will pay predators but not the wounded. #SBCtoo
