Independent providers play a vital role in ensuring NHS patients can access the cataract surgery they need - as a result of the sector's involvement, ophthalmology is the only major NHS specialty where waiting times are now lower than they were in 2019
Independent providers work with local commissioners to deliver high quality patient care with 98% rated good/ outstanding by the @CareQualityComm with the @RCOphth National Ophthalmology Database showing complication rates in the sector below half of rates expected by the College

We’re delighted that the Prime Minister today announced a new agreement between the NHS & independent sector to help cut the NHS backlog.
Independent providers already treat millions of NHS patients every year, and this agreement builds on these strong foundations
By making full use of the sector's capacity:
☑️ patients will be offered a proper choice of provider
🏥the sector will be supported to invest in & deliver an even wider choice of services to NHS patients to cut waiting times - free at the point of use & paid for at NHS prices.
Great news today that patients will have more choice & control over their NHS care, incl being treated in the independent sector
Our research found NHS patients need to travel just 12 miles – under 25 mins – to cut 3 months off their wait
