The Jaipur Foot stands as a transformative Indian innovation that has restored mobility and dignity to amputees worldwide. Conceived in 1968 by orthopedic surgeon Dr. P.K. Sethi and craftsman Ram Chandra Sharma, the prosthetic was uniquely engineered for local cultural and practical needs- enabling users to walk barefoot, squat, sit cross-legged, and traverse rough ground.
To maximize its global humanitarian impact, the inventors consciously refrained from patenting the technology. This open approach enabled the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) and international partners to manufacture and provide these life changing prosthetics and assistive devices entirely free of charge to underserved communities across the globe.
