“It’s a long way to London when you’re shite…” 🤣😭
Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle. Of course, this had to be here. Both Arsenal games should really have made this (plus the home league games against them in 21/22 and 23/24) list, but this was the highlight not just for Eddie Howe at Newcastle, but for me as a football fan in general.
Newcastle 4-1 PSG (2023) - The night when Newcastle because of European interest. Most viewed us as just making up the numbers, but on that night we tore one of the favourites to shreds. I was also able to celebrate the Schär goal before it went in because I had such a good view.
Newcastle 4-1 Brighton (2023) - In hindsight, this should’ve been a two part series, as I’ve had to skip so many games from the last few years that should’ve featured for only the three highlights. This game virtually secured a top four finish and Bruno’s goal made us go wild.
Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham (2021) - You may be surprised to see a defeat here, but the game was irrelevant. The takeover had just gone through and the atmosphere was fabulous, I struggled to hold back the tears and the joy when Wilson put us 1-0 up almost immediately was unconfined.
Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd (2018) - Only one game before the end of the Benitez/Bruce era features here, and that’s the Matty Longstaff one. A shame that he never turned out to be as good as that game suggested he would be, but he scored a great winner that will always stick with him.
Russia (P) 1-1 Spain (2018) - What a day. Russia’s wins over Saudi Arabia and Egypt in that campaign could’ve featured here too, but the highlight of it was undoubtedly the shock win over the Spaniards. At 1-0 down I thought that there was no way back for Russia, how wrong I was.
Brazil 1-7 Germany (2014) - I went upstairs to clean my room at 1-0, by the time I came back Germany were about to score their fifth. It was possibly the most astonishing game I’ve ever seen and the scenes in that partisan Brazilian crowd have stuck with me ever since.
Newcastle 2-0 West Ham (2015). A rare home game in this period that I missed. Watching on a television in Norfolk, I saw Jonas Gutierrez score a goal in one of the great moments, having recovered from cancer earlier that season. It would be the last enjoyable game for some time.
Newcastle 2-1 Chelsea (2014) - Jose Mourinho’s side were running away with the league and even by December there was talk about them going invincible that season, but that ended at a ground where he almost always loses. Two goals for the prolific Cisse on a special day.
Man Utd 0-1 Newcastle (2013) - Newcastle don’t win at Old Trafford, that’s what I was always told growing up, but that day we did. A first win on that ground for over 40 years was sealed in a disappointing season for us by a good Cabaye goal - still recall watching the game now.
Chelsea 0-2 Newcastle (2012) - I remember that this game wasn’t televised so my Dad went out to see it, and when he came back he said ‘you’ve got to see these goals’. Cisse’s first was superb, his second is the best Premier League goal ever. Also really secured European football.
West Brom 1-3 Newcastle and Newcastle 2-0 Liverpool 2012) - Couldn’t leave either of these out. Against West Brom we had the game won after half an hour playing some great football, and against Liverpool we booed Carroll off and Enrique ended up in goal after Reina was sent off.
Newcastle 3-0 Man Utd (2012). This was not a time when Man Utd lost like this often, and after a great start to the 11/12 season we’d been tailing off - until this game. It changed the momentum and Phil Jones also provided one of the funniest moments I’ve seen in football.
Barcelona 3-1 Man Utd (2011). The night when I stopped supporting English teams in Europe. I admit, I just chose to support the team that was winning, but watching Messi was enthralling - I became a big fan of his that night and was an avid La Liga watcher for years to come.
Arsenal 2-1 Barcelona (2011) - Just 11 days after the 4-4, a much better day for Arsenal. This was a time when I supported all of the English clubs in Europe (more on that soon), and for a Russian to have scored the winner excited me even more. A very fond European night for me.
