LOOK: A minor phreatic eruption at Taal Volcano Island's Main Crater at 9:14 AM to 9:23 AM today, 22 October 2024, was captured by the thermal camera of the Daang Kastila Observation Station (VTDK), VTBC IP Camera at Buco, and VTAG IP Camera at Agoncillo, Batangas. Locally called as "pusngat," this event produced a 1,500 meter-tall plume that drifted southeast. Alert Level 1 prevails over Taal Volcano.

I highly recommend going to see originals of some of the older references. Today I was able to see one of the volumes of the Verbeek 1885 publications on the 1883 eruption and tsunami of Krakatau along with the Royal Society report. Those figures 😍

I want to follow up on from the excellent thread by @andrewcraigtupp about plume heights. xitter.cf/andrewcraigtupp/status…

All of this combined with the fact that a "height" is dynamic and depends on what part of the plume you are concerned with, means that there isn't "one" height of an eruption.

When we borrow measurements from others it is important to understand that there are assumptions and uncertainties in their work just as in our own work. "How big" when it comes to eruptions is NOT a straightforward question.

This is a very important point when using this dataset for plume heights for eruptions.
