ernoulli principle in action. Spinning this flexible tube super fast creates a high-speed airflow → low pressure at the end → ping pong balls get 'sucked' up into the tube like magic. No vacuum pump needed—just pure physics

NASA's Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3), a microwave-sized CubeSat with no rocket propellant, spent nearly two years in orbit testing whether new carbon fiber booms could hold open an 80-square-meter sail pushed by sunlight. The sail deployed in August 2024, meeting the mission's main goal, but a bent boom and a persistent spin meant the team never steered it before NASA decommissioned the spacecraft in March 2026. NASA has since hired Opterus to build the deployment system for a sail about 20 times larger, due for delivery in early 2028.

Reversible snap ring (circlip) pliers. This tool is used to expand or compress retaining rings (snap rings / circlips) so you can easily install or remove them from grooves on shafts or inside bores. The reverse function lets you quickly switch the jaw direction for both internal and external rings without changing tools.

China has put its first intelligent grain-leveling robot to work at a Sinograin depot in Beijing, taking over one of the dustiest, most exhausting jobs in grain storage. Spiral-bladed wheels carry it across loose grain without sinking, while laser radars and a central route planner keep a team of robots from colliding. Three robots can level a 1,400-square-metre granary in under a day, a job that took three workers three days.

Seattle-based Overland AI has won a $20 million contract under the US Army's Engineer Autonomous Breaching Capability initiative, which aims to use robots to clear obstacles and minefields so fewer combat engineers are exposed to enemy fire. The company's flagship ULTRA vehicle carries 1,000 pounds at up to 35 mph with no driver, and at an exercise in Morocco this spring it fired a line charge to clear a wire obstacle.

These are blind rivet studs (threaded rivet studs): one-sided fasteners set with a lever riveter so a knurled body locks into the hole while a male threaded stud is left standing on the far side for a nut.

Shining 3D, a Hangzhou company that has been building optical measurement gear since 2004, makes handheld and industrial 3D scanners that all rest on the same principle, triangulation between a light source and a camera set a known distance apart. Some models flood the surface with a pattern of blue LED stripes for speed, others sweep crossed blue laser lines that hold up on shiny and dark parts, and the software stitches the frames together by tracking features, texture or stick-on markers. Its EinScan HX2 reads up to 1.6 million points a second at an accuracy of up to 0.04 mm.

A chemical anchor works by bonding a steel rod or bolt into concrete with a two-part resin instead of relying on expansion. You drill a hole, clean it, inject or insert the resin (or a capsule), then push in the threaded rod. Mixing the resin and hardener starts a chemical reaction. As it cures, it fills the hole, grips the threads, and locks the fastener into the concrete. Once set, the load is carried by the bond, not by wedging the hole open.
