Yugoslav map of Britain & Ireland from the 1980s, with English place names amusingly rendered phonetically to reflect their pronunciation.
Credit: Reddit user TheKingMonkey who explains the maps origins:
"From a display on the wall of the âMuseum of the 80sâ in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Iâm not sure why I like the Serbo-Croat (or at least thatâs what I assume it is) names for the cities as they look like they are almost phonetic attempts at English language pronunciations."

A wonderful photo of Victorian street life, a baked potato seller in 1892, photographed by Edgar Scamell.
The elaborate wheeled oven kept the potatoes piping hot, providing cheap, filling food for people on the move. On bitter winter days, a hot potato could even double as a hand warmer before you ate it!

This past Valentineâs Day, 71-year-old Brad Reese, proud grandson of Reeseâs Peanut Butter Cups inventor H. B. Reese, posted a scathing open letter to the manager of corporate brand and editorial at Hershey, accusing the company of unforgivably altering many Reeseâs products by replacing real chocolate with compound chocolate â basically using vegetable oils instead of cocoa butter to lower costs and replacing real peanut butter with âpeanut-butter-style crĂšmes.â
âAnd Reese wasnât alone in feeling like everything was getting worse,â writes Rachel Handler. âEveryone in my life I spoke to agreed that something was amiss, that Reeseâs â and commercial chocolate in general â didnât taste the way it used to.â
Handler would spend the next several months tumbling down a chocolate vortex, encountering dozens of eccentric characters, all disagreeing about the fundamental question of what chocolate even is and who it should be for.
âI learned that â not to sound like a LinkedIn guy â whatâs going on with chocolate is a parable for the modern world. That at this particularly bleak end stage of capitalism, everything we once treasured has or will lose its essential essence and MrBeast will always be involved somehow.â
For our cover story, Handler takes a deep dive into the molten belly of the chocolate world. Read it in full: nymag.visitlink.me/vKKky_
