Miami’s Freedom Tower once welcomed thousands of Cubans seeking refuge from dictatorship.
Today, it hosted NED’s celebration honoring a son of Cuban exiles who has spent decades championing freedom and democracy around the world.
NED is proud to present Congressman @MarioDB with the 2026 Champion of Freedom Democracy Award.
NED Board Chairman Peter Roskam and fellow Board members Mel Martínez, Ambassador Liliana Ayalde, Dayton Ogden, and Juan Zarate joined others at the ceremony in honoring his leadership and commitment.
Tributes came from former Colombian presidents @IvanDuque and @AlvaroUribeVel, Taiwan’s Vice President @bikhim, Venezuela’s @MariaCorinaYA, Lithuania’s @ZygisPavilionis and other pro-democracy leaders.
Together, their messages reflected the global impact of his work—and his enduring support for people striving to build freer, more just communities.

Whether you are conducting illegal oil transfers at sea or sitting in the corner office of a law firm, if you are supporting the Iranian regime, we will find you and sanction you. Iran’s facilitators must make a choice: Either you are with us or against us. We know who you are, we know what you’re doing, and we will continue to take action.
Today, as part of Operation Economic Outcast, Treasury sanctioned Panama- and Greece-based law firm Karnakis and Karnakis, shipping agents, and vessels which have supported illicit Iranian shipping activity, indirectly aiding Tehran’s ability to generate revenue to fund its military, weapons, and nuclear programs. Throughout Operation Economic Outcast, Treasury has continued to coordinate with counterparts in Europe and around the world to sever the Iranian regime’s remaining economic lifelines.

Today, Treasury took unprecedented action against the A7 Network, a shadow banking network with ties to Russia used by the Iranian regime to evade sanctions as part of Operation Economic Outcast.
Treasury’s @FinCENnews proposed a rule that would prohibit transmittals of funds regarding transactions involving the A7 Network’s Sub-Agents.
Additionally, FinCEN issued an Alert to help financial institutions detect and report suspicious activity related to the A7 Network.
Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned the A7 Network as a significant transnational criminal organization.

How can AI help activists overcome authoritarian repression?
At @NEDemocracy and @HRF’s AI Hack for Freedom III, activists from around the world brought real challenges from their work, teamed up with developers and designers, and raced to turn their ideas into AI-powered prototypes before pitching them to a panel of judges.
Competition winners developed tools to expand offline learning for Afghan women and girls, expose authoritarian influence in sports, and protect evidence of harassment.

Five years ago, Cuban artists came together to create a song that became the anthem of their country’s largest protest and movement in decades.
“Patria y Vida” expressed hope for a free Cuba and gave voice to the frustrations of millions, inspiring many to take to the streets and demand a better future.
Two of these artists, Latin Grammy Award winner Yotuel and renowned rapper El Funky, performed the song at NED’s 2026 Democracy Awards and used the occasion to call for the release of political prisoner Maykel Castillo Pérez.

“Religious freedom is essential to a free society.”
Authoritarian regimes fear independent faith for the same reason they fear independent media, civil society, and democratic movements: these are communities of conviction the state does not control.
Christians, Uyghur Muslims, Tibetan Buddhists, Falun Gong practitioners—across China, people are defending the fundamental freedom to believe and worship according to their conscience.
@SamuelBrownback makes a powerful case for standing with them.
“When a government claims the power to rewrite scripture, imprison believers, appoint spiritual leaders or separate children from the traditions of their families, people of faith must declare: a faith belongs to the faithful souls, not the government.”
Proud that @NEDemocracy has supported courageous communities defending religious freedom for decades.
Beijing is forcing religious communities across China to put Communist Party dictates above their beliefs and practices.
In @Deseret News, NED Board Member @SamuelBrownback explains why Americans should support those seeking to defend their faith from state control.

Brooklyn Rivera spent 32 months in detention with almost no contact with his family. When the Indigenous Miskito leader died in custody, there was no independent investigation or autopsy.
UN experts now identify at least eight deaths in custody and 161 enforced disappearances under Nicaragua’s Ortega-Murillo regime.
This is what lies behind the regime’s abolition of elections: a coordinated machinery of detention, disappearance and fear designed to eliminate every peaceful challenge to power.
Nicaragua’s democratic movement, and the families still demanding answers, deserve accountability, freedom and the right to determine their country’s future.

Cuban activists have risked their own freedom to inspire their fellow citizens to find their voice and demand change.
Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Maykel Castillo Pérez used their art to do it, while Félix Navarro spent decades organizing for democratic reform. All three were imprisoned for their efforts.

Four years later, the courage of Iran’s women endures—and so does the movement they inspired.
Grateful to my friend @AlinejadMasih for ensuring the world remembers.
Every day, you name someone killed by the Iranian regime showing everyone that behind this struggle are individual lives that must never be forgotten.
Woman. Life. Freedom.
Four years ago, everything started from here when women of Saghez the city of Jina removed their headscarves in protest against the murder of Mahsa Amini by Hijab Police.
Instead of mourning, they turned Mahsa’s name into our code word for resistance.
