The New York Times spent MONTHS on a crusade saying Dems should push Biden out for the good of the country. They did, and the first headline is about how Dems are in “disarray” with a candidate who is “out of her depth.” In case you’re wondering where this is going for the media.

It’s wild that Aaron Swartz was aggressively prosecuted for scraping JSTOR articles. Meanwhile huge companies routinely scrape the public internet and sell it for $20/month and all is well. Aaron helped create RSS, Creative Commons, Markdown and a little site called Reddit (which now ironically sells its data to AI companies) - all by the age of 26. All he wanted was free and open access to information. Really makes you wonder the dent he’d have made on the world if he was still alive today.
11 years, 6 months. RIP my darling boy.

First day, I got out of the Airport and I saw the ‘Uber Zone’. Instead of booking an Uber and finding it, you simply book an Uber and go to the first car in the queue of cars, tell your PIN to the driver and off you go to your destination. No waiting time.

All we did was force Red Lobster to sell its land to our other companies who rented it back at a mark up, force it to purchase marked-up supplies from our other companies, and then have it borrow a ton to pay c-suite bonuses, and boom, it went bankrupt just like that

As we speak, the pharmaceutical lobby is suing to stop Biden from cutting RX drug prices, the banking lobby is suing to stop Biden from capping credit card late fees, and now the airline industry is suing to stop Biden from requiring them to clearly disclose fees upfront. 1/

Fire the CEO, fire the CISO, fire the auditors, fire the internal compliance team…should I keep going ? One of the largest providers in the US, without MFA on an external remote access solution. Until real punitive punishment happens, this negligence will continue.
In recent written testimony, UnitedHealth CEO revealed that attackers used a compromised username/password combination to access Change Healthcare's Citrix remote access portal, which lacked MFA. It is still unknown which Citrix flaw was exploited during the attack, resulting in the impact of critical services used by healthcare providers across the U.S.

It’s crazy to think that GPT4 reportedly cost as much as $100M to train, or approximately 1/3 the cost of a single F22. – at Newton, MA

There is at least one industry research lab where the leadership believes that (super)human-level AI: - is attainable - is a scientific research question, not just a question of more compute and more data. - is not "just around the corner". It will take a while. - is not an existential risk. - requires contributions from the entire research community, because no one has a monopoly on good ideas. - hence requires open source platforms and open research, because no one has a monopoly on good ideas. - is going to change human condition for the better.

This is Carlos Pena. Last year, a SWAT team threw more than 30 grenades into his printing shop, destroying almost everything. Carlos was not suspected of a crime. Then, the city left him with the bill. He can no longer make a steady living. He's not the first victim. A thread.

If you are curious about a way Hollywood hits that make WAY more than they cost still somehow “lose” money, thus denying profit participation to the creators, here’s one: (🧵…)

AI won't take your job. But it will transform it and create new ones. This NYT article has quotes from economists who specialize in the effect of technology on labor markets, such David Autor, Daron Acemoglu, and @erikbryn : "Everybody I talk to, supersmart people, doctors, lawyers, C.E.O.s, other economists, your brain just first goes to, ‘Oh, how can generative A.I. replace this thing that humans are doing?’” said Erik Brynjolfsson, a professor at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI. But that’s not the only option, he said. “The other thing that I wish people would do more of is think about what new things could be done now that was never done before. Obviously that’s a much harder question.” It is also, he added, “where most of the value is." @davidautor : "60 percent of current occupational specialties did not exist 80 years ago." Every app pivoting to TikTok-esque short form video" is starting to sound like every digital publisher "Pivoting to Video" circa ~2010 - 2014, and we all know how that ended. (Admittedly not a direct comp, but just saying)
Spotify content creators are going to be the next big thing! Spotify are rolling out scrollable a vertical short video feature (like Tiktok) featuring new music clips, promo videos and podcast micro clips to help discover new creators. Aim: 50m creators by 2025...
