This operation reflects a shared commitment to disrupting transnational criminal organizations, reducing the harmful impact of illicit drugs, and helping preserve the safety, health, and well-being of our societies. The effort brought together Costa Rican authorities, U.S. personnel, and international partners under established legal and security protocols to ensure the narcotics were properly transferred and destroyed. For 35 years, Key West has been more than our base of operations—it’s been our home. 🌴⚓ JIATFS Deputy Director Rear Admiral Max Clark recently joined Joe Moore on the US1 Radio Morning Magazine to talk about what our mission means for Key West and Monroe County. Here are three big takeaways from the interview: 🤝 Proud to Be Your Neighbors: Since 1989, our active-duty service members, civilian staff, and military families have been proud Conch community members. We care deeply about the relationships we've built here. 🏗️ Invested in Key West’s Tomorrow: We're laying the foundation for a new, state-of-the-art 5-story headquarters on Truman Annex, planned for completion in the 2030s. This initiative solidifies our presence here for generations and bolsters a military footprint that brings an estimated $362 million annually to the Monroe County economy (5.3% of the local total). 🛡️ Protecting the Homeland: Every maritime operation and partner-nation exercise works to dismantle criminal enterprises throughout the Western Hemisphere—ensuring our shared neighborhoods remain safe. Mr. Eric Geressy, Senior Advisor to the Secretary of War for Strategy, recently visited leadership at Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATFS) to reinforce the Department of War’s unwavering commitment to combating transnational criminal organizations (TCOs). His visit highlights the absolute necessity of the Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATFS), which serves as the nation's premier shield and frontline defense in the Western Hemisphere. By bridging high-level Pentagon strategy with the relentless, 24/7 tactical and operational capabilities required to detect and monitor maritime and aerial threats, Mr. Geressy’s engagement directly supports the vital mission of stopping illegal drugs and securing our homeland. @JIATFS is far from a traditional, isolated military command, operating instead as a highly integrated "network of networks" that fuses domestic and international power to tackle complex global security challenges. This fully integrated team features 24 Foreign Liaison Officers (FLOs) representing 21 allied and partner nations, enabling instant multilateral coordination and robust information sharing. Furthermore, this collaborative framework seamlessly blends military assets with the specialized law enforcement authorities of key U.S. agencies—including the FBI, DEA, HSI, and CBP—to pool intelligence, maximize resources, and legally optimize critical interdictions before illicit cargo can reach our domestic neighborhoods. With over 26 years of experience as an Army Infantry leader and extensive background at @SOUTHCOM, Mr. Geressy is uniquely positioned to champion the JIATFS mission and secure the high-level resources necessary to sustain its operational successes. His visit serves as a critical mechanism to harmonize Department of War strategic priorities, like the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition (A3C), with daily tactical operations while validating this unique, "coalition-first" military-civilian framework as a template for modern, integrated global defense. This high-level advocacy ensures that the command maintains the advanced technological assets and funding required to disrupt adversaries who actively exploit illicit transit pathways. Ultimately, this mission is about far more than intercepting narcotics; it is a deliberate, lawful, and precise campaign to degrade transnational networks that use illicit trafficking to finance violence, corruption, and instability throughout the region. By taking the fight directly to narco-terrorists and their enablers rather than civilians, the @DeptofWar of War is actively defending the homeland and protecting the American people from poison and violence before it reaches our shores. Through these highly coordinated operations, the Department remains unwavering in its mission to counter illicit maritime activities, strengthen regional security, and safeguard the stability of the United States and our valued allies and partners.
