One of our busiest & most rewarding half-terms!
From admissions & 4 induction programmes to assessing Y7 multilingual learners, KS3/4 language support, amplifying student voices & appointing MLs Ambassadors in every department.
Now for books, coffee & pumpkin picking!
We met friends met in London at the weekend. Kids played, we spoke English & Polish.
Two older men said: 'There are too many foreigners.'
I replied: 'You’re never too old to learn another language, but you might be too ignorant.'
Silence.
Spent the last couple of days analysing GCSE results and English language proficiency data& the patterns are fascinating!
For EAL learners, English proficiency can explain around 22% of the differences in attainment.
Don't overlook it: it might be a missing piece of the puzzle.
Read to your children. Read with them. Read for them.
My daughter is just over 2& books are huge part of her life. I created a little reading nook for her & she absolutely loves it.
Recently, after swapping a book at our local book hut, she said: 'New book. Read home. Am happy.'

I've had to take a minute... It's been an emotional couple of days.
But... WOW! So proud and privileged to have led the English Department @TrinityAcademyL to its first set of GCSE results.
A phenomenal set of results from the Team. I've had to pinch myself several times...
It’s easy to overlook the advantages of multilingualism when we only focus on what a student can do in English.

Iced coffee in hand, putting the finishing touches to our Induction Booklet for new multilingual starters.
In a linguistically diverse inner-city school, good induction means being prepared, from the first contact with families to a student’s first lesson = You are welcome here.
The perfect trio: two fantastic summer reads and a great cup of coffee!
Both, the EAL Journal and Teaching Conceptual Understanding in Multilingual Classrooms arrived yesterday- I love this sort of commitment and passion for supporting multilingual learners!

Belonging for multilingual students isn't created by one big event. It is built through many small interactions.
Reminders & prompts to move from noticing students, to valuing their languages & cultures, to recognising their stories&identities.
Let me know if you'd like a copy!
When you open an email from The Bell Foundation to see their recommended summer reads and discover that your book is one of the featured titles! Thank you The Bell Foundation for including it in such great company!
England is multilingual.
The best evidence: playgrounds & parks. We've visited a few (many!) & there are always families speaking different languages. Kids are absolutely brilliant at mixing all sorts of languages while they play. We're happy to be adding Polish to the mix!
When we create opportunities for students to share their full linguistic repertoire, we gain a much richer understanding of who they are & the strengths they bring.
3 simple activities to use with your students to encourage these conversations.
Happy to share!

I've been keeping track of the new words my two-year-old daughter says each week. We're in the language explosion stage. She's combining words into phrases & sentences, beautifully mixing languages & even offering an immediate translation when someone doesn't understand a word.
💜🌟
We are proud to be a diverse and multicultural school. Our children embody our core values every step of the way. #Fusion 💜🌟
