Accurate. If Bioware gamers made a difference in EA pockets Bioware would still be open!
Good luck lmao EA's modern (largely sports) audience is super casual. Those gamers do not and probably have never touched a BioWare game, let alone a single-player rpg. They do not care. If they did, far bigger things they would've protested before this.

Is the definition of passion "subsidize money losing businesses"? Art can be done with passion because it's solo artists being paid by rich patrons. Studios require lots of people with salaries, this requires investment, investment requires returns. You can have games driven by passion, it's called indies and it thrives on Steam.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney is under fire over an old post he argues that studios going that don’t make money is “economically realistic” and “deserve the axe”🚀 He said this in reference to Looking Glass studio closing, and followed that “a studio that goes bankrupt deserves to be shut down” then went on to say there is room for niche studios as long as they manage to turn in profit, but studios with large overhead that aren’t profitable shouldn’t remain open. His concluded that “The dinosaurs die, but the way is cleared for cooler life forms to evolve.” This led to major backlash, especially in an industry where many layoffs and studio shut down occurred, not necessarily due to low profits, but excessive greed and insurmountable expectations from execs that treat gaming as purely a business, devoid of any passion😡

Tim Sweeney says sky blue, receives backlash from pro-steam bot accounts.
Tim Sweeney is facing backlash after an old post resurfaced where the Epic Games CEO argued that studios going bankrupt “deserve the axe.” Talking about Looking Glass shutting down Sweeney called it “an economically realistic day” Sweeney also wrote that “a studio that goes bankrupt deserves to be shut down”, arguing that companies that fail financially shouldn’t necessarily be kept alive. His conclusion is that “The dinosaurs die, but the way is cleared for cooler life forms to evolve.”

The idea a studio that made 3 AAA flops in a row, had lost all its OG talent, and whose last game barely hit half its sales target was suddenly gonna go on a generational run and put out a modern masterpiece is goofy. Game studios almost never reverse decade-long declines (publisher-developers like Capcom notwithstanding).

I appreciate Fran's POV here. I think many of us who spent the last 40 years playing games think of the industry as it was the 90s and early 2010s. That industry moved on, we didn't. The kids are playing Steal an Egg on Roblox. There are 935,000 concurrents on it at this moment. There have been 9.1bn plays since it launched in July. roblox.com/games/10777807077… The various Egg games on Roblox this year combined will have made more money than Veilguard in its lifetime. This is the kids' industry now, we are just old people nostalgic for the days of rock and roll.
🤦‍♂️Sigh. Best part of social media is how many people assume and infer something just to fit their narrative. I have barely played BioWare games since Mass Effect 3. I was lucky to know Ray and Greg back then. (I gave Anthem a shot and a review.) Obviously complex issues at BioWare and EA. I wasn't happy. I simply revere BioWare as an iconic studio in name -- and Mass Effect as a legendary sci-fi RPG. Getting rid of the BioWare brand completely is lame and tears away at the fabric of the industry, and western game development. If they needed to reboot the studio, infuse new leadership, new staff, etc. Have at it. I'm sure it was complicated. Sadly, that ship has flown. Hopefully Mass Effect finds a stellar new home soon.

Jesus christ guys, EA is very simple. If it makes money they will keep paying for it. The studio didn't make money. It didn't make money because not enough people bought their games. You are asking EA to subsidize a loss maker, and that is stupid.
EA's complete misunderstanding of BioWare's RPG heritage and a desire for mass market, microtransaction-fuelled action games has robbed us of one of the industry's greats. bit.ly/4skXwy5

This is correct. Gears of War being released on PS5 would not have sold enough copies to resolve the cost issue. The venn diagram of Gears of War fans who own a PS5 but do not own an Xbox or PC is a slim overlap. You can make an argument in expanding the fanbase for the longterm, but that is not a resolution for the lack of sales. At the end of the day, though, cost is the biggest issue. Cost does not work in the west anymore for most AAA products relative to their return. The audience willing to pay for games is too small relative to the expected expansion when many of these games were invested into 5+ years ago and when the teams were hired at the height of the ZIRP era. Meanwhile Roblox, China-made games, Tiktok and others have chipped away at game time spent and dollars spent. That doesn't mean that Xbox doesn't have a bright future, it just means that it needs to place smaller, more targeted bets, like its "burgers and fries" strategy for investing into the top franchises. I continue to believe that Minecraft is its biggest opportunity.
As much of an "Xbox hater" as I supposedly am, I don't really think the Asha leadership era has made many bad decisions, it's just that the brand is in *such* a tough spot there are not good answers for these problems. Nothing, not a PS5 release, not being out of Day One on Game Pass, would have saved a $400-500 million Gears of War. You can argue it shouldn't have spent that much in the first place but this is largely the AAA industry right now Now they have to make this decision over and over for every big game going forward, and they are about to smash into a new console generation that is either going to cost consumers a shit ton of money, or lose them a shit ton of money through subsidies. Just an awful position

When publishers sell their studios back to management with the IP (Hitman, DoubleFine) it's typically because the publisher believes the IP to be worth less than the cost of closing the studio. I am confident EA's new owners see huge value in the IP, just not in the cost structure of the studio. Buying a Bioware (liabilities) as management without the IP (which EA would not sell) makes no sense. All you would get is the name and debt.
I've been told that BioWare devs attempted to buy out the studio and Mass Effect IP before it was all shuttered but EA showed no interest in a deal. I appreciate that they tried. It seems like they all knew they were cooking up something great. #bioware #masseffect

Forcing developers to write a political statement to be used against them by the hate mob they’re helping organize is abhorrent.

"Short term profit" ... bro EA kept BioWare alive for nearly 20 years. I'm not saying they handled the studio well or that it was a good fit but this was not a short term situation. And BioWare was owned by "private equity" between 2005-2007. This is an incoherent argument.
This is private equity, this is what it does. Buy up businesses, run them into the ground, and rip them apart for short-term profit. The developers at BioWare know how to run the studio. They know how to make the games we all love. They should be given the first opportunity - and the federal support - to buy it and run it themselves. And if we want to avoid the Mass Effect effect in Canada, we should be keeping private equity out, not welcoming it in. pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/…

1. I am not suggesting Bioware died because of culture war issues. I do not know that this is the case. It is possible that their specific single player RPG products were not good enough. It is possible the market is too niche to sustain their product unless absolutely exceptional (see BG3.) Only one thing is clearly true: not enough copies sold to make the return on investment worth it for future titles. 2. Suggestions that the studio should have been sold implies there is a buyer. There is no buyer. Salaries are too high, games take too long. No one is buying big team studios that take years to make games anymore. The market for funding studios of that size DOES NOT EXIST. In many cases, especially in places like Canada with strict labor laws, it is cleaner to shut down a company than to attempt to restructure.

The crash in the game business nowadays is the first for the new generation of gamers, but only one of several in the history of games. Here are my thoughts from 2000 when a maker of beloved but long-unprofitable games went under.

Every unreleased or cancelled game had the potential to be great.
A former Mass Effect 5 developer has said that BioWare had seen what RPG powerhouses Larian and CD Projekt were achieving with their games, and was responding by taking Mass Effect to “the next level.” bit.ly/4Bd9j5s

On average there were 74 games released on Steam a day in 2025. With AI there could be 10x more, or 740 games released on Steam a day. On average there were 15,000 games released on Roblox a day in 2025. On average there are 20m youtube videos uploaded a day. Everyone still uses YouTube, creators make tons of money. Devs still building games and finding success on Roblox, new games popping off all the time. The answer to AI on Valve is better algorithms for discovery. As I said yesterday, Steam needs to become Roblox before Roblox can become Steam. Anything else is a dumb take.
Devs shouldn't have to be protecting their games, Valve should be protecting its shopfront: aftermath.site/steam-indie-g…

I want to be clear I am not celebrating BioWare's death, I think it is unfortunate. My purpose has been to explain the business realities causing it, which is high costs combined with lack of sales.
To all the haters celebrating BioWare's death.
