Thrilled to announce my 1st book! "The Nuclear Club" examines world affairs from Hiroshima to 1968 Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to demonstrate how the club consolidated authority via a counter-revolution that legitimated wars of choice a/g rogue states. sup.org/books/title/?id=3391…

Don’t care that we won. I want the club to demand an explanation as to what violent conduct actually is. This is 10x more dangerous than Bentancur’s head nudge. Don’t forget them lot not having Delap sent off last year. Sick of being treated differently

I joined the Quincy Institute to prevent the regional blood tornado now unfolding. Assad falling without US intervention was wonderful and *a point in favor* of my political stance. You on the other hand are personally invested in keeping Israeli and Saudi mass slaughter going.

I'm the kind of guy who tries to see value in all cultures, but if you're executing people for having sex then sorry, you're just barbaric. I am a better person than you, my values and culture are superior to yours, and I hope your culture perishes. Also goes for blasphemy laws
For those of you who are still being mislead by the fake news of the execution in Saudi. Here is what really happened. Now judge it yourself. Nazrul Islam and Sithi Akter, two Bangladeshi nationals employed as cleaning workers for the Bin Laden Group in Mecca, became romantically involved while commuting to work. Nazrul lived in a residential villa in Hayyal Iskan, while Sithi resided in Batha Kuraysh. In May 2023, the two engaged in illicit relations in a secluded stairwell room between Gates 85 and 87 of Masjidul Haram. Nazrul had asked an Indian acquaintance to stand guard downstairs, but the friend secretly recorded the encounter on video. Later, when the Indian national attempted to make advances toward Sithi and was rejected, he leaked the video online. The video quickly went viral, prompting immediate intervention by Saudi authorities, who successfully apprehended all three individuals. The Indian national received a 20-year prison sentence for recording and distributing the footage. Nazrul Islam and Sithi Akter were detained immediately following their arrest in May 2023. Nazrul had originally arrived in Saudi Arabia from Bangladesh between November 10 and 13, 2022. Following his arrest in May 2023, he remained incarcerated throughout a lengthy three-and-a-half to four-year judicial process leading up to October 2026. Throughout this period, official protocol dictated that the Saudi government notify the employer (sponsor) rather than foreign government authorities. Various rumors circulated online falsely claiming that the individuals were pilgrims performing Umrah or that the charges stemmed merely from public displays of affection. While the defendants were unmarried, the severity of the legal outcome was not solely based on the act of zina (adultery). Because the offense took place within the sacred precincts of Masjidul Haram, the court determined that they had severely violated the sanctity and honor of Islam's holiest mosque. Consequently, senior judges of the Supreme Court handed down the death penalty as an exemplary punishment aligned with Quranic principles and the Sunnah.

Saudi confirmed Oct 14 2026 execution of Nazrul Islam and Siti Akhtar for indecent act in Mecca mosque. Official statements lack post's details of video by Indian, gates 85-87 or May 2023. Consulate: Aug 2023 detention. Narrative is unverified viral claim. spa.gov.sa/N2701392 thedailystar.net/news/work-and-…

There were no U.S. troops in Ukraine in 2022, aside from a whatever small contingent was guarding the U.S. embassy. The document you are quoting - which you apparently either didn't read, or failed to understand - refers to "allied" troops in "Eastern Europe", not Ukraine.

Maybe it's just that history is an uneasy fit with the humanities (in many ways it's more of a qualitative social science), but I feel like historians are often figuring out cool new (well, old but new) things through research and the research university model is good for us
Humanists should be snobby about the fact that they are stewarding a tradition that stretches back thousands of years rather than doing busy work involving little technical puzzles. Instead they find dumb “research” niches to fill because STEM gave them an inferiority complex.

Not only did Salman Rushdie have to live in hiding, everyone tangentially involved with The Satanic Verses was in danger. They killed the Japanese translator.
If you ever sought out the novels of Sally Rooney in bookshops – when that was still possible – you’d know they sit in the fiction stacks adjacent to the novels of another SR whose books have been withdrawn in dastardly political circumstances. Until last week, “Rooney” and “Rushdie” had little in common beyond being shelfmates; now they have more than just a physical proximity. @tanjil_rashid_: This is censorship by other means newstatesman.com/comment/202…

british universities: “what is gen ed?” with a structure dependent on students electing a specific area of study before even entering and being barely able to waver from that path, the humanities feel set up for an even harder fall here (already in progress)
I am going to say something that very few people want to hear, but I think it's true. The only way to "save the Humanities" is through serious gen ed reform that most universities don't want to undertake. The hour is very late.

This feels like the time a British border guard interrogated me for taking a Brit’s job when I moved to Southampton to teach US history.
Let me get this straight: Purdue is bringing in someone on an H-1B visa to teach........ ENGLISH literature and writing to AMERICAN students? There are American English PhDs looking for work, but this position is being filled through a foreign-worker visa

Tragic
🧵The number of humanities dissertations produced annually has declined by almost half, according to a new analysis. The same report shows that language related to power and identity surged while treatments of “Western,” “European,” and “American” turned increasingly negative.

If we rank public universities by research output, the University of Michigan actually comes in first, followed by Berkeley, UCLA, and UC San Diego at 2-4, the University of Washington at 5th, and then UT Austin at 6th. Of public institutions, UNC is 12th, and UVA is 28th.
It is not wtf. Berkeley, UCLA, UM, UVA, UNC. Which one is UT dethroning? Be specific.

tony judt’s famous paragraph about one of the most distinctive features of america may not have as much basis in reality for much longer
For a long time there was an assumption that every state should have a publicly-owned research university offering graduate education in every field of scholarly inquiry. That assumption had been dying a slow death since 2008, but it is truly gone now.

Broadly suspected but now confirmed.
Per @Liz_Friden The U.S. is sending the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Middle East, two U.S. officials confirm to Fox News. The ships will arrive in the Middle East by the end of November, the officials said. These new deployments will add about 10,000 Sailors and Marines to the Middle East. The USS Roosevelt will be the third aircraft carrier in the Middle East, joining the USS George H.W. Bush which arrived to the region in April, and the USS George Washington which arrived in mid-August to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln. This will provide more options for the U.S. as President Trump is reportedly considering ramping up strikes on Iran after the Midterms.  The USS Roosevelt departed its home port of San Diego on Sunday and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit deployed from San Diego on Monday along with the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group. The Marine Expeditionary Unit and Amphibious Ready Group typically include about 4,200 Marines and Sailors. The USS Roosevelt carrier strike group includes about 6,000 Sailors.
