Wonder if anyone outside of the movie + documentary + journalsim professions cares about this debate or understands what's been going on over the past few years.
It used to be that documentary subjects were never paid. Now, for celeb and athlete stuff, the subjects are often the producers and are paid.
Google paid for The Thinking Game, but I don't think anyone really realizes that.
The idea is to avoid conflicts of interest and for things to be more pure and somewhere closer to objective and truthful if you don't pay.
Agreeing to pay @per_asp3ra and then pressuring him to unwind the deal is a hell of an act on all sides. I'm quite sure the audience has no idea of how things have morphed around all these customs in just the past few years.

Thank you for 35 historic years—and many more to come. 🌎♥️
To mark the 35th anniversary of Civilization, Polygon spoke with some of the people who created and stewarded the series over the decades. In this sprawling oral history, they tell the story of how Civilization became the franchise we know today. Rome, it seems, was not built in a day.

Too bad Larkin won’t allow a trade to Winnipeg, because Hellebuyck for Larkin seems like a fun trade for fans on both sides.
You would never guess it, but there are a lot of similarities between playing Civilization and being managing editor of a magazine.

I do not, in fact, want you to die in a plane crash.
I want to roll back a pretextual rule with no safety benefit that impedes airline competition by making it unnecessarily expensive to add service and pushes up prices.
Matt Yglesias wants you to die in a plane crash, apparently. nytimes.com/2026/10/16/opini…
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Yglesias argues US 1500-hr pilot rule (vs Europe ~200) is job protection raising fares, not safety. Europe has comparable safety per IATA. He says he wants no crashes, just to end a pretextual rule. Colgan pilots exceeded 1500 hrs.

Because the mortgage was money you owed the bank. Property taxes are money you owe the government.
We should have a serious conversation about property tax reform in this country, but it's hard to have that conversation when people don't even want to understand the basics.
“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?”
Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

The D.C. Council just held a meeting about how to raise taxes. Maybe instead they should just, you know, not do dumb stuff like this?
The D.C. Council will discuss a $620M proposal to add a roof to D.C. United’s Audi Field on Oct. 23.
The project would add roughly 8K seats and include nearby mixed-use development, with the district covering approximately $300M of the cost.

I do not think that we should accept more crashes, pedestrian injuries, and passenger assaults in order to protect largely part-time gig work, while also sending a signal that DC isn't friendly to new tech.

This was the last huge regular season game of the original era and we all knew it at the time, which made the stakes even higher.
