For a long time, India lacked high-quality textbooks on International Relations that can help general readers and aspirants to the civil services to learn basic concepts, stay updated with latest foreign policy developments, and understand global events from an Indian perspective.
The third edition of ‘International Relations’ by two distinguished former and current Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, Ashok Kumar and Rajesh Mohan, has filled this gap. It is concise, accurate, interactive and India-centric.
We at OP Jindal Global University were honoured to host the launch event of this book, which was graced by the presence of the State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Archana Gupta, and former Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, Subrata Bhattacharjee, along with the two co-authors. Do get a copy of this really useful primer. It will fill gaps in your knowledge and understanding!

Why is the USA unqiuely equipped to use sanctions and tariffs as weapons of economic warfare?
How have profiles of countries targeted by the USA with sanctions and tariffs changed over time?
What are the means and strategies by which targeted nations have survived American sanctions?
Is the Graham Act or the Sanctions on Russia and Iran Act (SRIA) a bargaining chip against India in trade negotiations?
How did India manage to show its economic resilience in spite of maximum American tariffs?
What is the future of the India-USA economic and commercial partnership amid the constant threat of further sanctions and tariffs?
For answers, watch Episode 189 of the Indian Diplomacy TV show on Doordarshan, featuring a discussion with Ajay Srivastava, founder of the Global Trade Research Initiative and former Indian Trade Service officer.

President Donald Trump has waived the looming 100 percent tariffs on India and others under the SRIA (Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act) owing to their purchase of Russian oil. He has justified this waiver on the grounds of “the national interests of the United States”. Last summer, I wrote an essay for the 50th anniversary edition of the Fletcher Forum of World Affairs, arguing that India is among a select few beneficiaries of the present era of great power competition, and that India’s ‘would-be great power’ status is being boosted by sharper geopolitical divisions.
Even though Trump has fluctuated wildly on this premise in his second term and has softened US policy toward China, his latest SRIA waiver suggests that American “national interests” are still aligned with India’s rise.

This is because Ukraine and the Europeans want credible security guarantees for the future, which Russia is unwilling to give.
