New article w/ @liamstanley and @DillonWamsley in British Politics. Using the tools of British political economy, we situate the interlocking crises of fiscal capacity, territorial integrity and decarbonisation in the UK in deeper historical context. link.springer.com/article/10…

Sadly, Chemistry may well be for the chop @sheffielduni too soon. It's not like it's produced any important alumni or anything 🤔
Can’t speak for other subjects but chemists have always chased relevant science areas since these are the ones supported by grants. The era of the gentleman scientist pursuing their idiosyncratic ideas is long gone

Still going strong on our 7th day of strike action! Our CEO and senior directors earn hundreds of thousands every year. We get 0% for the second year in a row. Our employer wants us to call off strikes but will not offer anything. @BBCSheffield @SheffieldStar @ucu

You were never meant to see this The flight path of a spy plane sent from RAF Akrotiri, the UK base on Cyprus, to gather intelligence over Gaza for Israel They have been going near-daily since December 2023 You have been paying for it all
BREAKING: Gaza spy flights from UK base on Cyprus secretly shift to plane leased by company with billions in US military contracts New flights are on blocked list, but we tracked US plane over Gaza on 28 July when pilot forgot to turn off transponder for 1st time in 20 months👇

Great piece from Sheffield UCU here on how, despite what university leadership might suggest, the data clearly shows any financial issues at the institution are not primarily the result of sector wide pressures, but a result of their mismanagement. ucu.group.shef.ac.uk/campaig…

KNEECAP STATEMENT: Since our statements at Coachella — exposing the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people — we have faced a coordinated smear campaign. For over a year, we have used our shows to call out the British and Irish governments' complicity in war crimes. The recent attacks against us, largely emanating from the US, are based on deliberate distortions and falsehoods. We are taking action against several of these malicious efforts. Let us be absolutely clear. The reason Kneecap is being targeted is simple — we are telling the truth, and our audience is growing. Those attacking us want to silence criticism of a mass slaughter. They weaponize false accusations of antisemitism to distract, confuse, and provide cover for genocide. We do not give a f*ck what religion anyone practices. We know there are massive numbers of Jewish people outraged by this genocide just as we are. What we care about is that governments of the countries we perform in are enabling some of the most horrific crimes of our lifetimes — and we will not stay silent. No media spin will change this. Our only concern is the Palestinian people — the 20,000 murdered children and counting. The young people at our gigs see through the lies. They stand on the side of humanity and justice. And that gives us great hope. Kneecap ❤️ – at Dublin City, Ireland

The last photo of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, detained after refusing to abandon his colleagues and patients. In just one image, we see both the power of Palestinian humanity and the moral weakness of all those complicit in genocide. End all arms sales to Israel, now.

📢New Publication📢Very happy to see this article finally out open access in @BritJPIR! Building on research from the PhD and postdoc last year, the piece conducts an archival analysis of the 1973 Northern Ireland border poll. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.…

It argues that, despite the politicising effects of the poll evident from the nationalist boycott, it did ultimately serve to depoliticise the border question by (partially) defusing unionist concerns following direct rule and by reconfiguring legitimacy for the UK longer-term.
